red mail The long search for Thomas Lloyd Evans.
I've had no success or contacts with this information for 25 years, but it is all I have - bits of stories gathered from older relatives, with facts for the Australian part of the story. THOMAS LLOYD EVANS, son of William Evans (farmer) and Margaret Owens was born in Manchester. He was one of about 10 children. He had a Grandmother LLOYD in Merthyrtydfil. He was an engineer who went to sea to gain maritime experience. Before he set sail he went to 'Lloyds' to see his uncle. The uncle was writing when Thomas arrived. He looked up and said, "What do you want?" Thomas took exception to that and left saying, "I don't want anything. I'm going to sea. I came to say goodbye." That uncle left him something in his will, but Thomas would do nothing about claiming it:neither would my grandfather, his eldest son. Thomas worked as an engineer in Australia. The earliest information about him that I have is that he was married in 1871 in Bendigo. He followed the finding of gold up the east coast of Australia to Charters Towers, where four more children were born. He was walking in Charters Towers with his daughter (who told these stories) when a woman, visiting from Wales, approached him saying, "Mr Evans, what are you doing here? An educated man like you is wasted in a place like this." His daughter said he didn't want to speak with her. Other snippets are that he was a Quaker, he had a dark spot on his head which he got while sailing in Asia and he travelled in Wales, singing in a Choir. He prevented his children from gaining further education, "You'll make more money in the mines. Education will get you nowhere." Surely someone has a missing Thomas in their tree! The names of his children are: Zelia victoria, Thomas William, Owen Lloyd, Olive Jane and Winifred.
