This page is for all general London enquiries. Use this page if all you know is that the family you are researching came from somewhere in London.
There are separate pages for each place within London, for the very small historic City of London in the centre of London, and the ancient parishes within the City of London.
The City of London gradually became a banking and commercial centre and the population moved out to the surrounding villages in the counties of Kent, Surrey and Middlesex. These villages became known as "London". The official boundaries of "London", and the area people generally refer to as London, has been in a constant state of flux over time and cannot be neatly defined.
CuriousFox, in common with other genealogy and history websites, uses traditional historic counties. This means places you may have thought of as part of London such as Chelsea or Woolwich are listed under their original counties of Middlesex and Kent.
If you know the name of a place within London try searching for the name of the place without adding a county. It may actually be in Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, or Hertfordshire.
