This is Bromley in the East End of London (postocde E3), often called Bromley-by-Bow, and not the Bromley in the traditional county of Kent. Just to confuse everybody Bromley, Kent (postcode BR3) is now officially a part of London.
This Bromley was also known as Bromley St Leonard, and formerly spelt Brambeley. "This place, in ancient records, is called Brambele, Brambelegh, or Brembeley.┬ŚNewcourt supposes the name to be derived from brom, broom, and leag or lege, a field, or perhaps from the river Lea, near whose banks it lies (fn. 1) . I think it more likely that it is derived from the Saxon word Brembel, a bramble, and lege, a field."
The Environs of London: volume 2, Daniel Lysons,1795
