Smith & MacDonald
John Smith (44 on embarkation), his wife Mary(40) their children Roderick (16), Hugh (14), George (12), Mary (10) and Margaret, called Flora (9.5) and possibly an older son Lachlan (19) emigrated from Tobermory on the George Fyfe arriving in Sydney in Jan 1840. John's parents as stated on his arrival documents (Bounty documents) were John Smith and Mary Macdonald. Mary's parents were Hugh and Katherine Mc? (surname indecipheable). None of the children's certificates in Australia note anything but born in Invernessshire Scotland. I have not been able to find their mother's death certificate. John's death certificate has finally been located. It notes he was born in "Airsaic" which I take to be Arisaig. Re Lachlan: I am not entirely convinced he was John and Mary's child. The family at least in the first generation born in Australia kept to naming conventions. Nobody was named Hugh but there were many John, Mary, Rodericks and Georges etc in later generations. Other information about Lachlan included that he could read and write and was a stockman. At least some of the family members remained together farming close by each other but I've never seen any reference to Hugh once the family arrived. The family was Catholic. Both John, his parents and Mary's parents were farmers. I have a copy of their arrival documents if it would be useful to see them. John is listed as 44 making his birth date around 1795 and Mary as 40 so born about 1800. I would love to find anybody knowing these families. Anne
