Arthur William Cottle  Jan 2006 (69849)
I am hoping to trace my uncle, Arthur William Cottle. Born c1880 Baltonsborough, Somerset. Married June 1/4 1906, Chippenham. Death registered Dec 1/4 1946, Devizes. I would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to help. Thank you.
Pound of Chippenham  Aug 2005 (61864)
Trying to connect two lots - William, wife Ann, sons inc. William and Henry, Grocers, to Harriet and Thomas of Hampton Villas, they lived so close that it seems it unlikely they are not related. Other surnames are maiden names
Wootten/Wootton  Revised 20Nov 2006 (60088)
Have entered this under Chippenham as being the nearest large town but the family were mainly based at Box and Corsham. James Wootten m. Christian Vezey at Bath in 1796,that much is certain, but cannot find his birth with any certainity. No James birth at Box the nearest is 9 May 1773 at Bromham, Wilts not too far away but cannot be certain; also there appear to be two James Wootten's at the same time, one at Box one at Corsham just 4 miles away and extricating their children was difficult. The parish baptism registers for Box and Corsham both give both parents names and it appears both James Wootten's married a girl called "Christian"; that there are two families appears as both had children named George and Elizabeth. The family at Corsham began their family as the family at Box ceased their family. No trace of a second marriage of a James and Christian can be found only the ancestors of the Corsham James, these can be traced back several generations. Is anyone out there researching the Wootten's?
Cowley of Hullavington  Revised 20Nov 2006 (60087)
I have put this under Chippenham as being the nearest large town. Sarah Cowley born 1801 Hullavington, d/o John Cowley & Elizabeth Crisp. Story is Sarah was the daughter of Earl Cowley of Draycott and was disinherited when she ran off to marry the Coachman losing her entitlement to Irish estates. Story comes from several different sources. Earl Cowley came from Ireland but his family name is Wellesley. Was Sarah's husband employed at Draycott as Coachman? They did run off to get married that much has been proved. If anyone has heard this story please get in touch. The Crisp family were big landowners at Hullavington and it may be them who disinherited Sarah. No records of staff at Draycott 1828 can yet be found. As Earl Cowley did not inherit Draycott until much later and as his family name is not Cowley this story has not been proved as anything other than a story, but if anyone knows anything please get in touch.
