Members of the MORTON Family
Hi I have reached a brick wall with a few of my ancestors from the MORTON Family. They lived in the Frizington/Whitehaven areas. If anyone can help with the following, I would be really grateful. They are: 1) Martha Ann MORTON, born 1st November 1859 in Tintwistle, Cheshire. Parents names: John MORTON and Mary Ann POLE. Family moved to Frizington, Cumberland where her siblings were born. I have nothing after the 1891 Census for her, nor any marriage or death record. 2) William MORTON, born around January 1866 in Frizington (brother of Martha Ann MORTON) - I have nothing for him after the 1881 Census. I cannot find any marriage or death records. 3) Harriet MORTON, born around 1868 in Frizington (sister of William and Martha) above. She married William J. HESLOP (could be HASLOP) and had a daughter, Mary E HESLOP, born 1895 in Frizington, Cumberland. William J. HESLOP died and Harriet re-married Richard THOMAS in around 1910. Harriet and Richard are mentioned in the 1911 Census, together with Mary, Harriet's daughter. Nothing is known about Harriet or her daughter Mary after 1911. 4) Joseph MORTON, born on 30th November 1870 (brother to those mentioned above). He married Mary Elizabeth COWLING (aka Elizabeth Mary COWLING). Joseph MORTON joined the Railway Pioneer Regiment and went to the Boer War in South Africa in the early 1900s. I have his discharge papers, but cannot find any record of him returning to England. Mary Elizabeth COWLING is mentioned in the 1911 Census as 'Lizzy' and is a widow. There is a death record for Joseph MORTON in 1904, but I don't believe this is the correct record for him. If anyone can help with information for any of the above, I would be most grateful. Thank you Theresa

GEORGE ALBERT HOLMES
Does anybody have this man in their family tree? Born in Whitehaven, Cumberland in 1892 to George Holmes and Jane nee Massey. He appears in both the 1901 and 1911 census at number 9 Michael Street, Whitehaven listed under his second name Albert In 1913 he married Sarah Ann Telford in Houghton le Spring, County Durham Sarah and George had seven children. Shortly after their last child was born in 1928 George did a flit and if family stories are correct he took the entire contents of the house with him. We have no trace of George after the youngest child was born, he just vanished but where did he go to? My suspicion is that he took up with or made a bigamous marriage with another woman and may have a second family

Jowart/Yowart
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has a Margaret Jowart in their family tree. She may have been born Margaret Foster and married a Jowart. It's possible but not 100% certain that she married John Kennedy around the middle of the 19th century.

Elizabeth Pickering McKnight & Leo Whamboult
I'm looking for any info on my g.g.grandmother, Elizabeth Pickering McKnight. All later census records & her marriage cert state she was born in Whitehaven c. 1847, the daughter of John McKnight, a miller. However, I cannot trace a birth certificate or any pre-marriage census info for her. It's possible she was illegitimate & 'Dad' was fictional, but still can't trace her. 1911 census shows a brother called Leo Whamboult, born in Hartlepool (no earlier trace of him apart from a prior census for Leonard Whamboult, actor & his theatrical obituary). It may be a stage name, as there is no historical record for that surname or anything similar. Please can you help?
