Alice Lilian Louise Jackson (herein after called Lily) was born In 1895 in Godstone, Tatsfield , Kent (nearChartwell Manor which was Winston Churchills home). Her parents were Charles Jackson b 1871 d 1920 and Alice Margaret Jackson (nee Berry) b 1874 d 1902. Both are buried in Majuba Hill, South Africa. Her mother died of tropical dysentery in South Africa when Lily was 7 years old. Her father was a railway engine driver between Durban and Natal. After the Boer War he was in charge of operations at the Katanga copper mine . Prior to the Boer War they lived in Charlestown and at the start of the War Lily and her mother were evacuated in a covered wagon to Durban where they went by ship to England. Charles had been captured by the Boers and held for several months. While they were in England her brother Charles Roberts Jackson 1900 d 1979 was born. {he was named after Lord Roberts who had a meritorious military career including Afghanistan, India and South Africa. His nickname was Bobs and Lilys name for her brother was Bobs ) After her mothers death she was sent back to England to the care of her grandmother Louisa Berry (nee Palmer).Her grandfather Thomas Berry died in the following year 1903 and the police pension he received when he retired from Scotland Yard ceased on his death so his wife had a difficult time and it was necessary for Alice to work as a domestic. Her brother, Robert, went to an aunt and after he tried to enlist under age at 15 he was later enrolled at the Police Academy where he rose to the rank of Chief Inspector of Kentish Constabulary. He had a wife ,Helene, and two cildren. He retired to Hastings, England after the death of his wife. Lily married Edward Hitchcock in 1912 in Surrey and emigrated to Australia in 1924. They had 10 children 5 of whom were birn in Victoria Australia

SCOTT and SCOT's HALL (sic) Surrey.....I have discovered ancestors born the 1600 's in Scot's Hall which was then listed as being in Tatsfield, Surrey. Now I have discovered it is in fact in or nearer to Chelsham an adjoining parish, but would still be grateful for any information given on the place or people.
Looking for any members of the above families in the mid 1900's.
