Entries around
Thomas Hobson
I am looking for details on a Thomas Hobson who I believe was born and christened in Penistone appx 1743 - 1748. The only other info I have is that he married a Mary Green in 1771 in Penistone, and they had at least five children including Ann, b. 1775. Anything in Thomas would be appreciated...DOB, Death, parents, siblings .. Thanks, Brian

Mary Green
Following on from a previous entry, (Thomas Hobson ), I have very little details on his wife, Mary Green , who again I believe was born in Penistone round about the same time. Other than their marriage date I have nothing...could anyone please help with DOB, Death, parents, siblings or anything else that may be relevant. Thanks, Brian

A booklet is being prepared with a page for each of the men commemorated on Penistone War Memorial (1914-18.) Any information and photograph copies eagerly sought.
red mail Scholey
My Grt grt Grandfather was Henry Scholey born c1831, Penistone. He was a Pork butcher and moved to Sheffield. I am trying to confirm that his father was John Scholey (Grocer/Labourer) b.1797 Rodger Royd, Silkstone and mother Hannah Dungworth b.1800 Norton, Derbyshire. Their other children were John c1829, Sarah c.1834, Issac c.1837.I would be grateful for any information that will confirm / dispute this. Thank you. Mandy
red mail Monumental Inscriptions
There are transcripts of monuments in the graveyards of Penistone Parish Church, Midhope Parish Church and Netherfield Chapel in the Dransfield Collection in Penistone Library. I am willing to do look-ups for anyone unable to visit personally.
red mail Priest
I am researching this family, especially Thomas PRIEST who married Sarah MITCHELL at nearby Silkstone 30 March 1812. His mother is described as a widow of Bradshaw when Thomas was baptised at Penistone 13 May 1785. Two possible candidates died shortly before: Benjamin Priest in Sept 1783 and John Priest in May 1784. Both were of Bradshaw, a farm near Langsett and several miles from Penistone church. Thomas himself left Bradshaw about 1820 (when the moors and commons were enclosed and so presumably the farming was no longer viable), worked in a mill in Glossop for a while, and then emigrated to New Zealand.
red mail Schoolmaster Ramsden
Seeking information on ancestor John Ramsden, schoolmaster of Penistone. He died there in 1726 according to parish records. Known to be father of William Ramsden, born 1718 in Penistone and later master of Charterhouse in London.
