red mail LAWSON
Has anyone any information on the Lawson family who had connections with the family who founded the fruit shops known as 'Barry Noble'
I have my great grandparents as James Haldon (b c1857 Alston, Cumberland) and Isabella Thirkeld (b c1859 in Newcastle upon Tyne). They both died in Newcastle in 1904 and 1907 respectively. Isabella had two illigitimate children before her marriage and went on to have a further 7 children between 1886-1899 all born in Newcastle. The census for James are confusing - the early census gives his birth town as Alston, Cumberland, the later census as Newcastle upon Tyne. I have no idea what happened to the younger children when their parents died. Any information on these families would be very much appreciated. My grandmother was Jane Elizabeth Haldon b 1886 - the eldest of Isabella's legitimate children.

Is the name Johannes another name for John or James or could it be that one of his parents was a foreigner? I would be grateful if anyone could find a trace of his birth and/or details of his parentage.
red mail McCarthy
I am seeking information on Michael McCarthy, who lived in Wingrove Gardens, Newcastle in 1911, aged about 60. Michael was born in Co. Cork and moved to London about 1851-54. He married Margaret Sullivan and their daughter Jane married George Crowden, an accountant; this family were also in Newcastle, living in Cherry Burn Gardens, Fenham in 1911. Jane Crowden had (at least) two children: Cuthbert William and Margaret Helen. Any descendants of these will be my relatives and I would be delighted to hear from them.
red mail Ellen Bruce (nee Hazel)
Ellen Hazel is my great aunt who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1896. I never knew of her existance until I found her listed on the 1901 census. Nobody in the family ever spoke about her, so I assumed she had died in infancy, then I found she was also entered on 1911 census. I found a marriage entry for St Anns, Newcastle for 1916 to a William Richardson Bruce. I then discovered they had four children between 1919 and 1928. There the trail ended. I could not find a death entry. However, recently I have been in contact with a granddaughter of Ellen. She explained that her mother, Ellen's daughter was brought up by an aunt because Ellen had been admitted to a mental hospital. In an effort to protect her, the family told Ellen's daughter that her mother had died, but, in 1951, they told her her the truth about her mother because Ellen had really died. I sent for the only death certificate which seemed to match, but it turned out not to be her. I presume that patients who die in a mental hospital would have a death certificate issued? Is it possible she was sent to a hospital elsewhere in the country? Can anyone help? This has driven me mad for six years now.
