red mail MAILES, MAILS ,Downes, Flower
Looking for descendents of Joseph Mailes and Elizabeth Bosford who married 16 Dec 1795. Records exist of their having baptised at St. Mary's Church, Luton, Bed. at least 7 children; Hannah, Martha, Barnabus, Mary, Eliza, George and Thomas. A George, Thomas, Barnabus, Martha and a John all MAILES have been located in Newfoundland (NL) during the mid 1800's. Thomas Mailes' death notice on 14 Dec. 1883 aged 62 at Halifax NS records his father as the late Joseph Mailes of Luton, Bed. On 17 June 1841 Martha(d. 1891)aged 86), wrote an inscription in her brother George's bible the "night before he left London for Newfoundland" Martha's obit states that she came from Bed. to work as a nanny with the family of Matthew Flower a stockbroker in London. She came to Newfoundland, married Charles Downes(1802-1888)(of London), at Burin, Placentia Bay, on 17 Sept 1849 & moved to Sound Is. Placentia Bay NL where Charles was lay Methodist minister and teacher. Martha is recorded as holding the evening services. Some of her poetry has survived. No record of children. In 1973 moved to St. John's NL. In the next generation we have another Martha Mailes (1841-1895),Rhoda Mailes (1831-1906) & Elizabeth Mailes (1848-1931) but no data on who their parents were. Elizabeth's father was a surveyor & was drowned with his 2 sons. Both Elizabeth and Martha were raised by ministers in the Old Perlican area of Trinity Bay NL. No record of names. A marriage announcement (24 Jan. 1856) is for Eliza Mailes "2nd daughter of Barnabus Mailes". Elizabeth Mailes married Wm. Charles Rayner of a silk weaving family fromt Nuneaton. They lived briefly in Montreal and England before moving as free settlers to Australia in 1878. I have info on the descendents of Thomas, Elizabeth, Rhoda and Martha (1841-1895) my great grandmother,& a little on George. Does anyoe have any additional info about any of those people, particularly the names of the parents of Elizabeth, Martha and Rhoda Mailes?
