From The Century Cyclopedia of Names 1895 Henry Bell was born at Torpichen Mill near Linlithgow, in 1767 and died at Helensburgh in 1830. A Scotch engineer. He is famous as the builder of the steamship - Comet - which began to ply in the Clyde in January 1802, and thus as the originator of steam navigation in Europe. red mail John Veitch/Marion Davie and Thomas Veitch/Sophia Bennie
Am looking for anyone with knowledge of John Veitch and Marion Davie who were both born in Linlithgow and married in 1712. They has 5 children (John, Thomas, Christopher, John (2) and Marion) al born in Linlithgow. Their son Thomas married Sophia Bennie/Beany/Binny in 1757 in Linlithgow. They had 8 children - Thomas 1757, Andrew 1760, Agnes 1762, Marion 1764, James 1767, Sophia 1769, John 1772 and Christoper 1774 - all born in Linlithgow. I believe that two of the second generation boys (Thomas and James) may have moved to Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire and married local girls; however James may have married Elisabeth Fratar in Linlithgow in 1799. It is likely that Christopher married Margaret Hamilton in Linlithgow in 1800. Thanks Mike
