red mail Alex. Torrens. Wilson Shipping Line
27th November 1892 Alexr. Torrens fell overboard from the ss. Ariosto into the sea outside Barcelona Harbour. Does any one have any idea why this ship, which sailed regularly from Hull to Gothenburg, was in the Barcelona area. Also what might have happened to his body? Hazel

William & Elizabeth JONES in HULL around 1770-1790 ?
William JONES (a son of Jacob ben Naftali Ha-Cohen from LAUTERSBACH and / or FULDA), probably born in 1750-51 in FULHAM, left KINGSTON upon HULL between 1787 and 1795 towards Denmark, where he settled as a merchant in the Grocery line in COPENHAGEN. In England before, he seems to have been a merchant in porcelain ("china"). He was married with a certain Elizabeth, about 20 y older than he's, who died at COPENHAGEN in 1809-10. They were accompanied by their children, Elizabeth and William, both probably born in Hull around 1775-80, who married resp. 1801 and 1805 at COPENHAGEN Johan and Caroline KIETZ, also brother and sister. Any other data concerning this family's arrival to / staying at HULL would be very welcome. I am a direct descendant of William's brother Jonathan who came to BRUSSELS in 1815 and died there in 1829. Thank you everyone !

red mail Leach cargo shipping
A family story has it that the family of my g g grandmother Elizabeth Leach came from Hull where they were involved with shipping - cargo I think. This could have been ocean going or on the canal. Elizabeth married Jonas Rhodes in Bingley, West Yorkshire, in 1831. On every census it states that Elizabeth was born in Wilsden. Maybe her parents moved there when she was an infant because I cannot find any record of her being born in Wilsden or in any surrounding area. Any information or ideas will be very much appreciated.

red mail Marriage certificate conundrum
I have an ancestor, Ann Elizabeth Carter who married George Fearnley in Doncaster in 1849, and in 1853 married John Meeson in Hull. On the first marriage certificate her father is given correctly as Joseph carter, but on the second marriage it says Thomas Martin, inn keeper. I am confused by this. ALso this second marriage has a Emma Martin as a witness, and the first marriage is witness by Martha Martin, Thomas Martin and another Martin that looks like it could be Charlotte Martin. The plot deepened when I found Ann Elizabeth (aged 13) in the 1841 Census, living with a Charlotte Martin (aged 12) at Bulls Head Yard, Gt.Church Street, Gainsborough. I am confused by all this Martin business and cannot work out what relationship is between the Martins and the Carters. Thomas Martin is shown as an 'inn keeper' on the first marriage and it just so happens that the groom was also an inn keeper (some link there perhaps). The second husband (John Meeson) was also a beer seller. If anyone can possibly shed some light on any of these I would be most grateful indeed

red mail Hugh Tom Dyer's Family
On 1911 Census another two sons of Hugh Tom Dyer and Jane Florence Gertrude (nee Lyth) were recorded. Thomas Arthur Dyer b.Jul qtr.1901 Myton, Hull and a further brother, David Sidney Dyer b.Jan qtr.1907 Middlesbrough, were both found living in Hull. Their siblings all born in Hull were Harold Gladstone b/d.1898, Olive Gertrude b/d.1900-01, George Eric b.1903, Alfred Edward b.1905 and Lithia Muriel b.1910. Hugh Tom Dyer's father was recorded as Thomas Dyer on his marriage certificate, a painter and decorator. I would be interested to hear from anyone working on this line of research.

red mail Angel Inn, Kingston Upon Hull
Samuel Atkins (b.Lancashire) collapsed and died in the ‘Angel Pub’, Kingston Upon Hull, early 1850's. Please has anyone seen a report of a sudden or violent death of this man in the public house between 1850-55? A Coroner's Inquest would probably have taken place. Not certain of surname for Samuel, so it may have been Atkins, Adkins or Atkinson. He left a widow and small child, Samuel.

red mail Whiteman - Merchant seaman 1888
Looking for family of my great grandfather John Henry Whiteman or Wightman b.abt.1864 Leith, son of William Henry Whiteman, a ship’s draughtsman. John was a merchant seaman recorded on marriage to Emma Donna Esther Lyth in 1886, Kingston Upon Hull, East Yorkshire. His name was registered on marr. cert. as MacWhiteman, but may have been known as ‘Mac’ by his shipmates. He worked for the Thomas Wilson shipping line (later Ellerman Wilson line) out of Hull, and was drowned on 18.9.1888 at Elsinore, Denmark when a ship-to-shore boat from the ‘S.S. Palermo’ capsized on launching, along with one passenger Arthur Shemeld from Northampton.
