My gggggrandmother was Mary Potter born 1786 in Hertfordshire. Her brother Richard was born in 1790. Mary married William Wilmot in 1803 (or 1807) in Hertfordshire. On 3 May 1810 Mary was convicted of stealing at Hertford, Liberty of St Albans Quarter Sessions and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Mary was transported on the ship "Friends" that departed 8 April 1811 and arrived in New South Wales on 29 September 1811. On the voyage to Australia, Mary gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born 2 May 1811. Given that Mary was in prison at least 3 months before Elizabeth was conceived, would William been allowed conjugal visits or was Mary impregnated by one of the prison guards? Elizabeth's baptism certificate lists William as her father. Mary's brother Richard was also convicted of burglary on 18 March 1807 at Surrey Assizes. He was given a life sentence and was transported on the "Admiral Gambier" that departed July 1808, arriving in New South Wales on 20 December 1808. I know Richard was Mary brother as Mary's Australian husband Daniel Brown applied to have his brother in law Richard to be released into his care from the work gangs. Any help regarding the parents of Mary and Richard Potter and any information about Mary's English husband William Wilmot(t) born 1786 would be appreciated. Many thanks Ellen

William Street and Mary Dye
My great x4 grandparents William Street (1787-1844) and Mary Dye (1791-1876) came from Hertford, but were married at St Andrews, Enfield and lived in Loughton. I am still trying to find a link between the Street families from Hertford and Loughton/Buckhurst Hill and those from Enfield. Does anyone know when my relations moved to Loughton? I believe all their children were born there.

John Day c1788-1875
John Day c1788-1875 1. John Day, son of John Day, was born in c 1788 at Hertfordshire, England, died on July 5, 1875 in Thurgoona near Albury, NSW at age 87, and was buried in Family Plot, Albury Cemetery, NSW. Notes: John Day was a convict who arrived at Port Jackson aboard the ship " Baring " on the 7th September 1815. The ship had sailed from Plymouth in England on the 20th April 1815, a voyage of 140 days. He had been tried and convicted of Petty larcency from a Anthony O'Connor and Bridget O'Connor between Paddington & Kings Bromley on 19th Oct,1812,at the time he was one of the canal boat Captains for Pickford & Co, he faced the Stafford Quarter Sessions on the 13th January 1813, and sentenced to 7 years transportation to the Colonies. The shipping indent papers give the following details about John:- Residence: Hertford. Trade: Labourer. Age: 27 years. Height: 5ft. 4 1/2 ins. Complexion: Fair and pale. Eyes: Hazel. Hair: Brown. Religion: Protestant. It is reasonable to assume that because of the delay between his conviction in 1813 and the departure date of the transport ship, that John may have been incarcerated aboard one of the prison hulks used for this purpose in the rivers and harbours in England. More about John: In 1828 his occupation was Farmer - Portland Head, NSW. Religion: Protestant. John married Jane Connolly, daughter of James Connolly,in c 1822 in NSW. Jane was born in 1805 in Sydney, NSW, died on September 30, 1852 in Portland Head, NSW at age 47, and was buried in Catholic Cemetery, Windsor, NSW. (With her father James and brother, James.). I have a copy of John's death cert it shows that he was born in Hertfordshire, England, his father also named John a naval officer and his mother as Unknown. Would be appreciative of any further info that can be provided as to his parents etc. Regards, Lionel & Moya
