My grt,grtgrt grandfather came from grt bardfield Wright Dusset he was a shoemakeraround 1814 ,he had one son Thomas b 1814 he married Harriet Burges1838, they had 1 child JOSEPH B 3/5/1840 HE MARRIED Mary Ann Poulter 1861,they then had 11 children one being my grd father Jim he was bord 30/5/1873 at Slatted Cottages in Bardfield The family then moved to Penshaw Co Durham around 1881 .Please contact me if anyone knows of this family THANKS

George Hills and his wife Mary nee Undershell had a large family at Great Bardfield from 1780 to the early 19th century. The Undershells were an important family of London tanners and I suspect George Hills was connected with the trade.His son George became a London tanner, another son Thomas Bryant Hills was a London Corn factor.

My great, great, great grandfather, Arnold Thorne was (according to the 1881 census) born in Great Bardfield, Essex c. 1831/1832. Have only found reference to one church, St Mary the Virgin, but no luck so far in locating baptism record. Is/was thisthe only church there? He was a Bootmaker and at some point moved to North London.
