WILLIAM DOWNES
In the 1851 Census, my 3xgreat-grandfather, William Downes appears. His occupation is shown as "Policeman at Eton", and he was living at that time in Brocas Street, Eton. William was born in Windsor in c1804, and in another document his occupation is given as "shoemaker". William married Ann Blackall. I'm not sure how long they lived in Eton - 1861 census shows them in Windsor. William's parents were Thomas Downes and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). Any information re William Downes, or Eton police in the early 1850s before it became part of Bucks Constabulary in 1857 would be great.

red mail Allaways in Bucks?
Does anybody have any information regarding the Allaway and/or Hughes family in or around Eton? I have James Allaway and his wife Susannah, both born 1806. I have found them in the 1841 census for Chelsea, Middlesex (name wrongly transcribed as Attaway) but cannot find them at all after that. There is a Susannah Allaway who died in 1846 in Eton and I am wondering if this is 'my' Susannah. Her maiden name may have been Hughes.
