Nicoll, John, Writer to His Majesty's Signet, c. 1585-1668
John Nicoll (surname also spelled Nicholl, Nichol or Nicol), solicitor, diarist and Writer to His Majesty's Signet, was born in Glasgow before 1590 and worked most of his life in Edinburgh. On 21 Oct 1606 he married Bessie, dau. of James Thomson, Edinburgh merchant; when she died in Aug 1627, the following 12 Dec he married Magdalene, dau. of Andrew Hutchinson, another Edinburgh merchant. Records indicate that he had at least one son, John Nicoll, Jr., 1609-1685. I have tentatively identified this line as part of my patronymic ancestry, and would like to find a living descendant of the male Nicoll line to arrange a y-DNA test for verification.

red mail DICK St Cuthburt's Edinburgh Midlothian
I am seeking information about Andrew DICK. He married Martha CHADWICK OR CHEDWICK OR SHEDWICK OR SHADWICK. I do not know their dates of birth nor when they married but the first child I can find a birth entry for is Hugh DICK born 1806 in Edinburgh. Andrew and Martha had four other children, Ann (born 1809), Elizabeth (1811), Andrew (1814) and James (1817). Andrew was, at different times, a soldier, a coachman, a gentleman's servant, a publican and a porter. I cannot find information about any of the family after 1817 except for Hugh who married in London in 1826.
