I am looking for information about a John Shepherd born in Castleton Rochdale according to the 1861 Census when he was living with his wife Eliza and daughters Emma and Caroline in Manchester. Does anyone know who his parents were? I believe he was my gggg-grandfather, but I am having problems tracing him in birth/marriage records. The name may have been spelt Shephard.

At 1901 Census of Castleton my Grandfather William Howarth and wife Emma plus children John 8 Arthur 4 (my father) and Edith 2 lived at 4! John Street. At 44 Canal Street were Anthony Howarth Alice Ann his wife (nee Needham) Clara 18 Samuel 15 and Herbert 3 Am interested in the Town its history and any contact with descendants. William emigrated to Australia in 1902 and New Zealand in 1905.

The above families were living in Castleton in 1901. William and Susan (Crabtree) Griffiths; Children were Mary (1874), James (1876), and Hannah (1879). Mary married James Henry Willis (1866) and their sons were Norman (1897) and Frank (1900). Frank was my father, he left home around 1918/20 working on a merchant ship and "jumped ship" in the USA.
