Gallagher and McNicholas families in Carrownteeaun, between Bohola and Kiltimagh, as well as in Comderrynabinnia, both in Killedan Parish in County Mayo
My great-grandfather, Peter Gallagher, was born circa 1846, probably in the townland of Comderrynabinnia/Comderry in the parish of Killedan (Kiltimagh) in County Mayo, although he raised his family in the nearby townland of Carrownteeaun, in the same parish. He married Bridget King from the parish of Kilcolman (Claremorris), not far away in County Mayo. Peter had two brothers, James and Michael (Mick), and a sister, Mary (Gallagher) Gill. The father of these siblings was Thady/Tadhg Gallagher, anglicized in some early records as Thomas or Timothy, as in 1856 in Griffith's Valuation. Simon Gallagher, living in Comderry, appears (from DNA matches) to have been Tadhg's brother, and Martin Gallagher, listed in the 1834 Tithe Applotment Book in the nearby townland of Craggagh, may have been another brother. Mick and his wife, Honora Larkin. took their children to Missouri in the US in the late 1870's. All but two of Peter's children moved to New York City later on. James Gallagher married Catherine McNicholas in 1866, and they remained in the parish (shown in the 1901 census), but at least one of their children moved to the UK. Catherine was from the townland of Altbane, and her father was John McNicholas, as revealed in her civil marriage record. Mary Gallagher married Michael Gill in Mayo and they lived with their family in Kiltimagh. James, Mick, and Peter each either married into or had descendants who married into the McNicholas family from the same area, and some also married into the Loftus and Larkin families. Any info about the these siblings, other siblings they may have had, or earlier family history would be appreciated, and I can share info about known US and Irish descendants.
