I am looking for info on my g/grandfather John Naughton, who on the 1881 census in Leigh Lancs England is shown living at 9 Trafalgar St, Leigh, aged 50. His wifes name was Winifred, maiden name unknown, but possibly Bird. I am told that his birthplace was Ballinasloe, Galway. Can anyone help?
James BUTLER was born in Ballinasloe in 1822/3.His parents were James/Edward BUTLER and Mary MORAN. He had at least 2 siblings - Michael and Anne/Anna. JAMES emigrated to NSW in 1841 and married GRACE HANLEY in Sydney Australia in 1846. GRACE HANLEY had arrived in Sydney, from Limerick, in 1839.One of their children, ANN MARY BUTLER married GEORGE PERCY MONTAGUE GILDEA in 1871.She lived as a country doctor's wife in Kempsey,NSW, until her husband's death in 1888. One of their children GEORGE PERCY GILDEA (m.Margaret FOSTER,1901) was my grand father. His father was reputed to be a colonel. Others in the line were also in the military and were governors of the infamous Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. Any information re descendants here in Australia or in Ireland would be wonderful.
