Coughlan/Fitzgerald (Jeremiah)
Ellen Coughlan daughter of Timothy Coughlan & Margaret Whelan *married Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Jerry) recorded at Kilbehenny RC Church 1848. *Movements unclear but they appear to have been in Kilglaffe about 1897 (at least Ellen was as her brother William who died in Sydney Australia left her a sum of money in his will when he died in 1898) * After her husband died she resided with her niece Mary O'Donoghue at 16 Lower Cork Street, Mitchelstown as indicated by 1911 census. *Ellen's sister Margaret married John McGrath (various spellings) about 1856 marriage recorded at Kilbehenny RC church. (Mary O'Donoghue nee McGrath is a daughter of Margaret and John and she was born in Mitchelstown Co. Cork) *Unclear how many children Ellen and Jerry Fitzgerald had but it appears there could have been at least one son Patrick and a grandson John born1887 at Caherdrinny - picked up from 1901 census, still investigating. *haven't established when she died but must be after 1911 census and possible burial in Coughlan grave in Mitchelstown RC cemetery adjacent to church. When I visited in 2007 headstone of Margaret Coughlan died 1860 removed by Cousin John so I was told. *Cousin David Coughlan (son of John Coughlan) told me in October 1992 that when he died he would be the last one to be buried in the family grave (there were already 17 family members in the plot). He died late November 1992 about a week after I returned to Australia. Updated 7th, December 2015

David Coughlan son of Timothy Coughlan & Margaret Whelan married Ellen MaGuire (variations) we think C1858/60 probably in the RC parish of Knocklong/Glenbrohane. We can't find a record but it could be another 'miss' in the transfer of microfiche records to digital records. Children; Timothy baptised/birth recorded Knockalon/Glenbrohane 1861, the rest of the children are recorded at Kilbehenny RC church William 1862, Joseph 1863, Patrick 1866, Margaret 1868, Mary 1870, Ellen 1873, Johanna 1875 civil record no church record, Elizabeth 1879, John 1882, Bridget 1888. We suspect there was a sixth son born before Timothy but we have no baptism/birth record. Update 23rd December, 2015; As the NLI has made available online Catholic Parish records of baptism and marriage - we have now found the marriage of David Coughlan and Ellen Maguire. This has raised several more 'how did they do it' questions. The marriage entry is on the 1st of January 1861 but great grand father's surname has been written in the original register as COCHLAN which is what I would term an English phonetic spelling of COUGHLAN. Interestingly when we checked the birth of the first son Timothy born in the same parish his surname is also spelt COCHLAN. Point 1 - the parish of Knocklong/Glenbrohane according to what I have read had many English people living in the dual parish during the 1700/1800's - wonder whether the parish priest then was of English birth and wrote the surname phonetically. Point 2 - interestingly I assume that when the marriage and baptismal records were taken from the 'Church of the Latter Day Saints microfiche record's they were downloaded into the computer by different people because ; Point 3 - David's surname in the computer is under COCHLAN while son Timothy has been entered as COUGHLAN - Did the person downloading the baptismal records have some knowledge of the family because if Timothy's entry had been placed under COCHLAN we would never have found him in the first place. Just a couple of interesting thoughts when you are researching Catholic Parish records. This is about the fifth or sixth mistake I have come across in creating the computer records from the microfiche records. As I have experience in trying to read microfiche records I know difficult it is and coupled with the knowledge of how this project was put together under an EU grant back in the 1980's to create employment it is understandable. Please if you find any such errors in your family history as you research the records please let the Heritage Centre know as they will check it out and alter the computer records. John. K. C

Margaret Coughlan daughter of Timothy Coughlan & Margaret Whelan married John McGrath (variations on various documents) in 1856 recorded at Kilbehenny RC Church. to date we have only located one daughter Mary Ellen part of the reason is that she was born in County Cork not Limerick - see further marriage of Mary McGrath and James O'Donoghue.

Mary Ellen McGrath (variations various documents MacGrath, Mcgraigth, McCraith etc) daughter of Margaret Coughlan & John McGrath married James O'Donoghue in Mitchelstown RC Church records 1883. They lived and operated the public house at 16 Lower Cork Street Mitchelstown which I suspect was owned by her father John McGrath before he died. Children of the marriage all baptised Mitchelstown RC cathederal; John Joseph 1884, Patrick 1885, Thomas 1886, William 1890, Johanna 1892, James 1893, Margaret 1895, Michael 1898 Most of them plus Mary's mother Margaret are buried in the RC Cathederal cemetery in Mitchelstown. we have yet to locate where her father is buried as he is not listed on the O'Donoghue family plot. .

red mail William Walsh, son of Thomas Walsh and Margaret Slattery.
WILLIAM Walsh (Bapt 1st Nov 1864) was the youngest child of Thomas and Margaret. Their children were Julia, John, Bridget, John, Patrick, Mary and my Wiliam, who married Margaret Hogan of Mitchelstown. Bridget married Mathew Meade. John married Mary O'Brien. Patrick married Johanna O'Brien, whose children are Michael, John, David, Patrick, Edward, Pierce, Mary, Thomas. Were the O'Brien girls, sisters? WILLIAM (1864)had a large family in Australia. I'd like to find details of his older siblings and their families.
