ANGUS 'NESTER' MATHESON 1784-1876 was born in Dornock, Sutherland Scotland. In 1814, he married Christiana Gordon Matheson in Balnabruach. In 1815 they emigrated to the Red River Settlement in what is now Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They traveled on the sailing ship Prince of Wales into Hudson's Bay. They were Selkirk Settlers. I'm interested in learning more of this couple's ancestors. I'd be happy to share what I know of them and their descendants. They are my 3rd Great Grandparents.

Member's Profile
Paternal - My Great, Great Great Grandfather Roderick McKenzie was born in the late 1700s likely in Ross and Cromarie. He married Janet McClellan likely also of Ross and Cromarty. We know their son William was born in Urray, Ross and Cromarty in 1806. William is my Great Great Grandfather. He and his wife Catherine Grant (born in about 1815) emigrated in about 1840. They went to Warwick, Ontario, Canada area where they homesteaded. My Great Grandfather Alexander Grant McKenzie was born in Ontario in 1845. He was a young soldier, who in 1870, was sent West to put down the Riel Rebellion in the Red River (now Manitoba, Canada). Sargeant McKenzie was given a soldier's land grant near Stonewall, Manitoba. He married Isabella Fraser of the Selkirk Settler Scottish community there. Most of those settlers emigrated from Kildonan Parish near Helmsdale in Sutherland County, Scotland. They sailed in the Prince of Wales disembarking in Hudson Bay in about 1815. These Sutherland family names include Fraser, Matheson, Bannerman Gunn, Gordon and Polson. My Grandfather George Garnet McKenzie was born in Manitoba but moved to Saskatchewan where I was born. On my Grannie's side - my Great Great Grandfather John Waterston married Elizabeth Wallace likely in the 1830s in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. My Great Grandfather John Waters was born in 1856 in Corsock, New Galloway, Scotland. He married Margaret Cunningham Daughter of John Cunningham and Jane Smart. Margaret was born in 1856 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire County, Scotland. They lived in Prestwick, Ayrshire which is where my Grandmother Georgina McCready Waters was born. I'm particularly interested in ancestors in Scotland and Ireland. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm a retired school principal now enjoying getting connected to my past.
