Sinclair, Brown, Browne, Preece
Richard Sinclair was operating as a military artist and photographer in Northgate from the 1870's to 1917. He was born in Dublin and had served in the 10th Royal Hussars. Upon leaving the army he set up business near the cavalry barracks. His early works were watercolours of cavalrymen with their horses. Later work was in photographs. He also did general family portraits etc. He married Alice Brown sister of Frederick Henry Browne (sic) the organ builder. The photography business was carried on after Richards death by his son-in-law, last name Preece. One of Richard's sons, Valentine, had an antiques shop at the White Swan in Northgate. Other Sinclairs were involved in the licensed trade in Wincheap and as entertainers. Richard Sinclair junior appeared locally in the early 20th Century as a "coster entertainer," dressed as an East End pearly king type of character.
