I'm seeking help to identify a great-aunt by marriage whose name was Susannah Georgina Doughty and who was born about 1875. At her marriage to John Joseph Hope in Cumbria in 1915 her father's name was recorded as Mark Doughty (deceased) occupation sea-captain. This is my brick wall. The only Mark Doughty I can find in census and BMD material with a daughter Susannah of about the right age, lived at 40, Low Row, Wilton in the Guisborough district with his wife and family in 1881. He was an iron stone miner who was born at St. Faith, Norfolk in or about 1835. His wife Rebecca and children, James, Robert, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Susannah were also born in Norfolk. James (born 1859) married in Yorkshire and became a farmer. Robert (born 1862) became an iron stone miner there and shortly after the 1881 census was taken he joined the British Army for about 6 or 7 years. Mary Ann (born 1857) went into service. I don't know what happened to Elizabeth (born 1870), but I suspect Susannah (born 1874) went to work in the household of Esther Riley of Ewood Hall, Midgley, in the West Riding by 1891. At this time her brother Robert was working as butler to the Daniell family, St. George, Hanover Square, in London. Robert married in London then emigrated to the USA. Did Susannah follow her brother Robert to London and go into service there? Do I have the right Susannah? I wonder if anyone has any leads. (Mark Doughty died in January 1906 in the Guisborough district.) Carolyn.
