Potter, Humphries.(Humphreys?) Toogood
In 1871 census Thomas POTTER, his wife Frances Naomi, and family are shown as living Chailey; Actually they were in Ringmer Road, Ringmer. Listed as living with them is John Humfris aged 14, whose full proper name was John Laing HUMPHRIES. (We presume that as there were a number of children in this household the enumerator didn't get his name in full or there is an error in the transcription.) John Laing Humphries was born Brighton in 1857 the son of Elizabeth S Humphries, but when baptised in March 1858 mother's name shown as Elizabeth Humphreys. He was later 'farmed out' to live with the Potter family. Other than her name on John's birth certificate and baptism we can find no trace of Elizabeth S Humphries / Humphreys. However there was obviously a connection between her and the Potter family as another of the Potter children was shown as Henry Humphris Potter. On his memorial in Ringmer churchyard he is shown as Henry HUMPHRIES Potter so this is more likely to be the correct spelling. Has anyone any knowledge of the Potter or Humphries families circa 1857 to 1897 in the Ringmer / Chailey area and the connection between them? There appear to be no living descendants of the Potter family in England today and one in tne USA has recently died. Frances Naomi's maiden name was Toogood and she came from the Isle of Wight. We have been unable to find what the connection was between her and Elizabeth Humphries for Frances to be bringing up Elizabeth's child. Any suggestions please.
