Sir Joseph William Bazalgette was born 1819 and died 1891. An English engineer. As chief engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works he designed and executed (1858-65) the system of drainage now in operationin London, as also (1863-74) the Victoria, the Albert and the Chelsea embankments.
