The Glasgow German Club circa 1900
My great-grandfather, Alexander Thomas Assafrey (b. Reval, Livonia, Russia - now Talinn, Estonia -, in 1844) joined the Glasgow German Club some time after his arrival in about 1870. He must have spoken Estonian and Russian as well as German (his brother Christian, who remained in Livonia, printed books in all 3 languages), but presumably there were few Estonian or Russian speakers in Glasgow at the time. I assume it was at the German Club that A.T. Assafrey got to know his much younger German-born friend Eugen Schultzen. Does anyone have ancestors who belonged to the German Club? I'd like to know more about it.
