Rainhill Asylum
Fron Annual Report of Inspector of Lunacy 1878 BPP Vol XXXIX

14th August 1877.
With the exception of 2 women who are out on trial, and 1 man
who has escaped, we have seen the patients now onthe books of this
asylum.
They are 692 in number, and included 324 men and 368 women. Three
are out of county patients. There is only 1 vacant bed, and that is
in the female division. The weekly rate is 9s-11d for patients from
Lancashire and 14s for those from out-counties.
Since the last visit the following admissions, discharges and deaths
have taken place.

Fifty-one recoveries are reported, and in 56 instances post-mortemexaminations have been made. A large number of deaths, 26 resulted
from general paralysis, but there is only one instance to which any
particular allusion need be made, and that is to the death of a
