Fred Learoyd (b 1901) in Bedale 1916-1918
I'm looking for any information on Fred Learoyd born 1901 in Thornton Steward to unmarried servant Annie Elizabeth Learoyd. By 1918 his mother (who had married and had two more children) was dead and he was living in Bedale, working as a hotel porter. He enlisted in the Army, but gives as next of kin a "friend", a police sergeant at the Bedale Police House. He didn't get on with the army and went AWOL, and his military record suggests he was already a young man in trouble. Possibly his police sergeant "friend" was a copper who had already had dealings with Fred as a young tearaway and tried to help him keep to the straight and narrow. We believe Fred faked his own suicide in the 1920s after discharge from the Army and that he then went to Canada. We're interested to find out anything about his time in Bedale.
