Clerkenwell, Middlesex

John Cresswell 1790-1867
JOHN Cresswell, a Brass Founder, was born about 1790, and was certainly baptised on 5 Apr 1790 in St. Martins, Birmingham. He died in Clerkenwell Workhouse on 5 Apr 1867.

JOHN married MARY SHEPHERD NORTHFIELD on 22 Apr 1808 in St. Andrew, Holborn. MARY died on 8 Nov 1865 at 10 North Street, Clerkenwell (where she had been living with her son JAMES) MARY'S second name was from her mother MARY SHEPHERD.

Their son, JAMES, an Optician, was born about 1822, and was baptised on 13 Jan 1822 in St. James, Clerkenwell.

The 1841 census lists MARY and JAMES living at 23 Reliance Square, Shoreditch. No mention of John. (HO107/706/4/14)

The 1851 census lists JOHN and MARY living at 23 Reliance Square, Shoreditch, and indicates that John was born in Birmingham. (HO107/1533/204/01)

The 1851 census lists JAMES living at 10 St. John's Sq. Clerkenwell with his first wife and children. (HO107/1516/243/4)

The 1861 census lists JOHN and MARY at 23 Reliance Square, Shoreditch. (RG9/231/59

The 1861 census list JAMES and family living at 10 North Avenue, Clerkenwell (RG9/196/95/45)

The Clerkenwell Rate Books show that JOHN lived at 62 Coppice Row, Clerkenwell in 1827-9, WILLIAM Cresswell at 61 Coppice Row 1831-2; Robsons London Directory shows 'JOHN Cresswell, Brass Founder' at 61 Coppice Row in 1833.

MARY'S parents - Mary and William Shepherd:
Mary Shepherd died in 1825, lived at 61 Coppice Row.
William Shepherd died in 1830, lived at 71 Coppice Row.
Their Son, William Shepherd, died 1832, lived at 43 Coppice Row.

MARY'S uncle ' John Northfield ' died in 1831 and lived at 61, Coppice Row. In his Will he said to MARY SHEPHERD NORTHFIELD wife of JOHN CRESSWELL and unto her alone so that JOHN CRESSWELL shall have no part or parcel thereof.

1. Where did JOHN and MARY live between 1833 and 1841?
2. Where was JOHN in 1841 - he is not in the census return.
3. When did John enter the Clerkenwell Workhouse? - presumably between 1861 and 1865 - MARY died in 1865 at 10 North St. JOHN died in 1867.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
