I am trying to find out what kind of residence 2 Barker Hill, York was in 1881. There are 40 boys living there between ages 9 and 12 but it is the household of a 70 year old Chelsea Pensioner and his family. All the boys are recorded as scholars but is it a school?

I am looking to find out more about my G G Grandfather George Frederick Tucker, he was born abbt 1857. He lived in York between 1882, when he married Emma Goodyear and 1890, when he died. He is buried in York cemetry in a public grave with no memorial. His occupation on the birth certificates of his children is musician in 4th West Yorks Militia based at Fulford Barracks. Can anyone help me to find out more or possibly know where I can get hold of army records to try to find his birth place.

Family history
My late Grand-father served during the Ashanti War 1895-1896 also, during the three years campaign in South Africa 1899-1902. His army service with the 2nd Batt. West Yorkshire Regiment. I would be pleased to hear from any contact that also had a family member that served with this regiment in either campaign.

From Annual Report of Inspector in Lunacy 1878 Appendix H Hospitals p 342 York Lunatic Asylum, Bootham 20th January 1877. We have this day visited the York Lunatic Hospital, the new regulations of which are now in thehands of the printers, having been approved by the Secretary of State. The private patients consist of 71 gentlemen and 55 ladies. The patients of the pauper class are 25 males and 26 females. No person is under restraint or seclusion. There has been no restraint, but 1 man has been secluded, and 7 women have been so dealt with, the man on various occasion for a total period of 198 hours, the women collectively for 337 hours
