Hi I am looking for more information on my 3 x Great Grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth Sayner (nee Copley), James was born 1836 in Brayton, Selby and died around May 1914 in Selby, Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Copley in Sherburn in 1835 and died 25th September 1910 in Selby. Together they had several children including my 2 x Great Grandfather James (1867-1938), I would like to know more about them, I have never been told anything and I have never seen a picture of either of them if any exist. Hope anyone can help, would especially like to make contact with anyone else who descends from them and may have information.

Where did they go. 1901 census lists the children of Alice Fell in the Selby Union Workhouse probably orphaned. Alice herself died in 1898 possibly in the infirmary at Selby Workhouse. I found Eva in 1911 employed as a cook at the Workhouse but no mention of her siblings. I also found an Eva Fell that married Henry Townsley in Selby 1914. I think her sister may be the same Emilly ,married to a Harry Knightson in 1917 at Bramhope. Any information on them or the workhouse would be appreciated.

My Great Great Great Grandfather was a Joseph Mitchell of Selby,born Around 1811 He was a Master Cooper based in or around that area.He Married Hannah Coppock of Grindleton and had several Children 2 of which were Sarah Ann and Joseph,they lived in Gowthorp street in the mid 1800's.Joseph his son married an Ann Elizabeth ?? of Cliff.There Son John Mitchell moved later to Salford Gt Manchester and married Emily,He died tragically at the age of 23 in an accident on the railway,where he worked. Looking for Family history in Selby 1700 to 1754. Who do I ask? Where may I find information. Please provide contact information. My research is on Joseph Sharp a Potter who had a shop in Selby. Joseph Sharp is also buried in Selby 1775. He was also a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers. He move with wife Sara and children to Brimham in 1754. My great grandfather Charles Howarth was born in Selby 13th March 1855 and married Jane Milner on same day 1883. He was a saddler and harness maker and lived in Church Hill. He had at least 8 children (Annie, George, Harry, Joseph, Eva, Hilda, Richard, Walter). Any info would be most welcome.

Hi. I am trying to find information on a couple who marred in 1865 in the Selby area. They were CHARLES HORSEFIELD (sometime spelt Horsfield) and ELIZABETH VOLLANS (sometimes spelt Volans). Any information on their family would be appreciated. I have a feeling Elizabeth's father was called William, but this is only a guess. William Hall was born in Yorkshire circa. 1806 and moved to Southwark (London) where he worked as a Butcher and/or Slaughterman. He married Jamima Ives circa. 1825. Census data lists them having had 12 children and living mainly in Kent Road Southwark. I would welcome contact from anyone who can add to his Yorkshire origins etc.

George ward was born 1868 in Millgate Selby and married Annie Drury on 26 Nov 1898. His parents were John Ward born 12 Jan 1842 in Wistow and Elizabeth Hobman born 1845 in Selby. he had siblings, John 1866, Arthur 1874, Annie 1881 and Lucy 1888. George Ward and Annie Drury migrated to Sth Australia with their daughter Adelaide May Ward but it is rumoured that George was deported back to England after Annie died in a house fire in 1918. My Grandmother Hilda Baines was born 11th January 1902. Died 1987. Hilda married Thomas Henry Castle April 16th 1927. They had 5 children - plus Hilda had an older son before she was married. I am looking for Hilda's parents. I dont know where they came from - only know that Hilda and Thomas lived in the Cliffe/hemingbrough area when they were first married and then moved to Barlby.

Does anyone recognise this name ? I'm looking for information regarding my great grandfather. He is know to have lived in Audus Street after WW1 however died before 1943. He was a retired soldier and was married in 1898 to Catherine Clark Hunter. His father was Martin Burke however I am having problems clarifying his mothers name with Ann or Bridget. I have details of a Martin & Bridget Burke living at the RC school house at St James , in 1881 census which I think is in Audus St. So this looks likely. If anyone can help I'd be most grateful.

I am also researching the Smith's of Selby. I am a direct decendent of William Smith b1833 who married Elizabeth Lazenby b1840 (daughter of Thomas Lazenby & Grace Beckett) in 1860. To my knowledge they had the following children: Anne Smith b1862, Mary Smith b1863, James W Smith b1865, Sarah Smith b1868, Thomas Ed Smith b 1871, Elijah Smith b1875, Esther Grace Smith b 1877, Gertrude Smith b1881, Florence Smith b1884. I am related to James W Smith (b1865, m1888, d1895) who married Grace Anne Illingworth (b1864) in Leeds in 1888. They had the following children: John W Illingworth b1883 - Grace's child, Harry Smith b1890, Maggie Smith b1895 (my great grandma), Louie Smith, and they adopted Ernest Wright b1900(shown on 1901 census as a 'Nurse Child'). Ernest died at approx 18yrs in WW1. My Nana always told me that she thought he was adopted from the Rowntree family in York. Not sure how true this is. Found her in 1871 Census using surname Werner and living in Chorlton-upon-Medlock (Manchester, Lancashire) with new born infant daughter, as yet unnamed. She identified Selby Yorkshire as her place of birth and her age as 21 (born 1850). Her age was probably overstated, but possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am very interested in learning more about this couple and their children because I believe they had a daughter named Susannah Matterson who married George Dickinson Sep 1846 in Selby (Vol 23, page 489). The latter couple is found with children in censuses from 1851 to 1881, generally listed as Joseph and Susan Dickinson, but once as George (1851) and once as Susannah (1871). Joseph died 1883 in the Chester le Street district of County Durham. Susan is found in Seaham Harbour in 1891 and in Pittington in 1901. She died in the quarter ending March 1903 in Durham district. I descend from their youngest child Joseph Edward Dickinson, who was one of four brothers (Thomas White, George Simpson, William T., and Joseph Edward) who moved to the U.S. between 1879 and 1888.
