red mail Joseph Thompson b ca 1840
Hi. Looking for info on Joseph Thompson, seaman, I believed to have died about 1880 at sea. Married Ann (unknown maiden name - maybe Hayden - born in Ipswich) about 1867/8. They had a son Joseph Edmund Thompson born 1868 and a daughter Hannah Sophia Thompson born 1870. They lived at 50 Island (Rd. / Lane) in Knottingley in 1871. In 1881 the children were in the seaman's orphanage in Hull. In 1891 they were in Stepney, London with their spouses and a woman, Ann "Hayden"(?), was named as their mother. She had a third child, Fred Thompson, aged 11. Any info on Joseph snr and Ann please???? (There is another Joseph Thompson, Mariner, that I located in CuriousFox, but he is too old. Maybe they are father and son, as the older one also had a son Joseph - and the age gap is about right). Rumour has it that one of our ancestors was a pirate and was made to walk the plank, so that could be why Ann changed her surname (embarassment maybe, if it was her husband whose demise was less than honourable) or else I guess it could have been her father-in-law I suppose. I also don't know why the children would have been in the orphanage in 1881 if mom was still alive. Maybe it was a temporary arrangement or something.
