Eastwood - Huddersfield
I'm struggling with my family line, which seems to originate in Yorkshire. My Grandfather Thomas Eastwood was born in Wootton Bedfordshire on 29 July 1894. He had six children with his wife Lily May Pateman ( born 7 July 1892 in Litlington, Cambridgeshire): Hilda May Eastwood - Born 1919 (Huddersfield) Kenneth - Born 1921 (Huddersfield) Charles Edward - Born 1923 (Huddersfield) Doris - Born 1925 (Huddersfield) George Richard (my father) Born 1928 (Wrestlingworth, Beds) Barbara - Born 1931. His father was a Thomas or John Thomas Eastwood born about 1866 apparently in Blackpool Lancashire. I have a copy of his wedding certificate showing him married to a Sarah Anne Keep (Also Born Wootton about 1863) in St Paul's Church, Bedford in 1892. His occupation is given as Groom as is his father Richard. They had four children: Charles Frederick - Born 1892 Thomas (My Grandfather) - Born 1894 Annie - Born about 1897 Alice - Born about 1900. Charles was born in Huddersfield and this may provide a strong clue to where the family was based. All my father's older siblings were - born there and the perceived wisdom is that my Great-grandmother died while the children were young and my Great-Grandfather got re-married and moved back to Yorkshire - there is a rumour of more children. Census records are proving a little confusing. The only Blackpool born John T Eastwood showing in the 1891 census is living with his brother Charles (born 1858 Huddersfield) and working as a groom on the Stansfield Estate in Yorkshire. Charles W Eastwood - age 33 Born Huddersfield, Occupation Coachman Philippa Eastwood - age 35 Born Lower St Columb in Cornwall George R Eastwood - aged 8 Born Harrogate John T Eastwood - aged 25 Born Blackpool, Occupation Groom. It all goes cold for John in 1881 but I’ve got Charles and Philippa living in Whitestones, Nethertong, York Charles W Eastwood - age 23 Born Huddersfield, Occupation Coachman Philippa Eastwood - age 28 Born Lower St Columb in Cornwall Her age doesn’t quite fit but the birth address seems too coincidental. Tracking back to 1871 I can find the family of a Richard Eastwood living in Stone Pit Hill in Huddersfield with a son Charles Wm Eastwood with the right birthyear. Richard Eastwood - Born 1821 Huddersfield, Gardener Mary Eastwood - Born 1817 Golcar, Yorkshire Mary Hannah Eastwood - Born 1846 Golcar. Occupation shown as “Formerly Servant” Charles Wm Eastwood – Born 1858 Huddersfield John Thomas Eastwood – Born 1866 Huddersfield. The problem here is that John is shown as Richard’s grandson not son and his birthplace as Huddersfield not Blackpool. Richard’s family then turns up in the 1861 census as living in Croft House Lane: Richard Eastwood – Aged 41 – Born Almondbury (?), Coachman Mary Eastwood – Aged 44 – Born Huddersfield, Coachman’s wife Mary H Eastwood – Aged 15 – Born Huddersfield, Woollen Weaver Edwin Eastwood – Aged 12 - - Born Huddersfield, Woollen Cloth Cutter Richard H Eastwood – Aged 9 – Born Huddersfield Annie E Eastwood – Aged 5 – Born Huddersfield Charles W – Aged 3 – Born Huddersfield The fact that so many of the male line seem to have worked as Coachman or groom leads me to think I might be on the right track although Richard would have been over 70 when John got married in 1892. I suspect that both Richard and Mary died between 1871 and 1881 as, so far, I cannot find them on the 1881 census.
