red mail Appleton Wiske and Grimath
Ancestor Mary Swales (married John Learoyd in Ripon 14 Oct 1839) born abt 1817. In 1851 census she is listed as born in Appleton Wiske, but in 1861 census she is listed as born in Grimath, Yorkshire. No searches of maps, etc., have so far yielded a Grimath ... might it have been a farm or hamlet near Appleton Wiske now disappeared? From someone else's family tree I have her father as Thomas Swales, but no further information than his name.

I am a great grand-daughter of Martin Trewhitt (or Trewhite as listed some places). I saw someone looking for two Trewhitt brothers from Appleton Wiske - there was John and Martin in Appleton Wiske living with their grandparents Thomas and Maria Walls. Martin went on to marry a Florence Nightingale from the Kent area, and they immigrated to Canada between 1905? to 1909, settling near Ottawa Canada.
