red mail Robert Johnson - village policeman? - (West Lutton - Yorkshire, East Riding)
I have been shown a photograph dated about 1919 of Robert Johnson, a native of Bulmer, who is thought to have been a policeman in West Lutton for most of the first two decades of the twentieth century. But his uniform is unusual, He has a five-button tunic and whistle chain, with two white inverted chevrons above the left cuff (like military good conduct stripes) and a modern style flat-topped service cap. The cap badge and collar-dogs are intertwined and indecipherable initials, not any pattern of crowned police badge that I can trace. I have considered that he could have been a railway policeman and that the initials could be, e.g. GNR (but they could be ERC, or indeed anything else!). Any help would be appreciated.

His father is recorded on the marriage registration as "Hunstman" living at Birkby (I have his engraved hunting knife). Joseph moved to Bath where his wife bore four children, John Thompson Naylor born 5 Mar 1864, Ann Elizabeth Naylor born 20 Aug 1865, Charles Willam Naylor (my grandfather) born 10 Mar 1868 and Beatrice Midwood Naylor born 10 Nov 1871 died 6 Dec 1872. Is there anyone who would be willingto look up a specific entry for me please in the Winestead Parish Register. for EDWARD GREEN to ELEANOR MEEDLEY 1769 I am hoping that the grooms ocupation will be listed. I have been searching for his marriage for 30 years but the lack of brides surname is prohibitive. William TINDALL baptised 15 June 1805 in Rillington, Yorkshire, son of John Tindall and Elizabeth. Married Ann CLARKSON and had seven children including my ancestor JOHN, 1829. Seeking William's father John's ancestry. There may possibly be a connection with KNAPTON HALL - a William Tindall born 1732 lived there, followed by successive generations. My branch lived in Scarborough from about 1860(another William born 1865). I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has access to the Rillington registers (or districts nearby) who may solve either the Knapton Hall mystery or the origins of John Tindall. Thank you.
