My great grandmother was an Emily Walker and lived with a Thomas Smith. There were five children - Frederick, Violet, Thomas, Arthur and Charles. Violet and Arthur were sent to Canada in the early 1900s. Charles taken to live with Thomas Smith's sister aged 2 yrs. Violet, Thomas and Arthur were taken into Barnado's ~ Frederick remained with Emily who died of pluerisy in her early 30s. Frederick then going into Hessle Cottage Orphanage. Any information to broaden the history would be appreciated. Carol

William JONES, father and son in HULL around 1770-1790 ?
William Jones (a son of Jacob ben Naftali (Fulda) Ha-Cohen), probably born in 1750-51 in FULHAM, left KINGSTON-upon-HULL around 1790 (exact date Unk) towards Denmark, where he settled as a merchant in the Grocery line in Copenhagen. In England before, he seems to have been a merchant in porcelain ("china"). He was married with a certain Elizabeth (Unk surname, place and date of marriage also Unk) and when he left he had at least one son, also named William, born in HULL in 1777-78. Any "clue" in order to confirm these data, perhaps also to give additional details would delight me : I am indeed a direct descendant of one of his brothers, Jonathan (who died in 1829 at BRUSSELS), and I try to collect largest possible number of elements of this story of the family. Maybe one day I'll write a book ! Thank you everyone !

red mail Leach cargo shipping
A family story has it that the family of my g g grandmother Elizabeth Leach came from Hull where they were involved with shipping - cargo I think. This could have been ocean going or on the canal. Elizabeth married Jonas Rhodes in Bingley, West Yorkshire, in 1831. On every census it states that Elizabeth was born in Wilsden. Maybe her parents moved there when she was an infant because I cannot find any record of her being born in Wilsden or in any surrounding area. Any information or ideas will be very much appreciated.

Sarah Isabella Weldon, born 1876 in Hull
Does anyone know what happened to Sarah Isabella Weldon, born in Hull in 1876. She married Frank Harvey ( b.1875 in Hull) in 1901, but separated sometime between then and 1911. Frank was recorded in the 1911 census as single and a boarder and Sarah was not with him then. I have been unable to find her in the 1911 census, searching in all counties and using both her married and single names. They were never divorced, as Sarah refused to divorce Frank and it was only after her death that he was able to marry again ( in 1937). However, I have not yet found a death record for either Sarah Weldon or Sarah Harvey and wondered if anyone has any information about Sarah. Thank you. Gillian.

red mail Looking for relatives of HOLMES Ernest
I am looking for relatives of my maternal Grandfather Ernest Holmes. Ernest's father Abraham HOLMES and his wife Ellen BROWN, Abraham's two married sisters, their husbands and their two children, came out to Australia from Hull in Yorkshire England, in 1901. Abraham had received letters from their elder brother George, who had migrated ten years earlier. Ernest HOLMES was paralysed when he was a toddler. Abraham & Ellen decided to sacrifice their savings and get specialised advice in England. Abraham stayed on the farm in Australia working while the Ellen BROWN undertook the journey overseas with the Ernest. The London specialists gave the terrible verdict that the little boy would never walk again. This was a tragic blow to the Ellen, almost due to go into hospital for the birth of her second baby. When Ernests brother was born (Alfred), the doctors and his mothers relatives urged her to have the baby adopted out as the felt she would be unable to cope with the double burden. Eventually it was decided to leave the Alfred with his aunts in England and return with Ernest to the anxious father in Australia.

William Cooper ( circa 1812)
My 3rd great grandfather, William Cooper, was born about 1812 ( the 1841 census records his age as 31 and place of birth: Yorkshire.) This is the only census he was in. He died after 1846 and before 1851. He married Elizabeth Bateson, born in Dunkeswick, in 1812 (near Harewood, West Yorkshire) in 1838, in Hull. Their ages were listed as " of full age" and William's father was listed as William Cooper, farmer, and Elizabeth's as Charles Bateson, carpenter. I am trying to find out where exactly William was born...it seems unlikely that it was in Hull, since his father was a farmer and his wife was from West Yorkshire. Does anyone know of this family? In the 1851 census, Elizabeth was a widow, with children: Charles and Ann. By 1861, the family had relocated to the Bradford area. I wondered if perhaps William Cooper was from the same village as Elizabeth Bateson, or perhaps if Elizabeth's family had moved to Hull and had met William there. If anyone has any information about the family would you contact me please? As I live overseas I cannot visit any of the local register offices to check on births before 1837, or church yards. Thanks, Gillian.

red mail Does anyone know, who is Thomas BELL?
I'm looking for information on Thomas Bell who lived in the Holy Trinity area of Kingston upon Hull. He lived as a boarder with my ancestors, George COWL and family. In 1841 he is detailed as being 40 and a clerk. He lived his whole life single and after George Cowl died in 1849, Thomas continued to live with George's widow Mary Ann in West Street, until her death in 1875. He was never married, but I think there must have been a connection to the family! Could he have been related to the family through George Cowl's first wife Margaret Bell? Also, one of George and Mary's children was named Thomas and one was given a middle name of Bell! Thomas was born in abt. 1800 in Ripon, Yorkshire and died sometime between 1871 and 1881. Does anyone know anything about this Thomas Bell? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
Marriage certificate conundrum
I have an ancestor, Ann Elizabeth Carter who married George Fearnley in Doncaster in 1849, and in 1853 married John Meeson in Hull. On the first marriage certificate her father is given correctly as Joseph carter, but on the second marriage it says Thomas Martin, inn keeper. I am confused by this. ALso this second marriage has a Emma Martin as a witness, and the first marriage is witness by Martha Martin, Thomas Martin and another Martin that looks like it could be Charlotte Martin. The plot deepened when I found Ann Elizabeth (aged 13) in the 1841 Census, living with a Charlotte Martin (aged 12) at Bulls Head Yard, Gt.Church Street, Gainsborough. I am confused by all this Martin business and cannot work out what relationship is between the Martins and the Carters. Thomas Martin is shown as an 'inn keeper' on the first marriage and it just so happens that the groom was also an inn keeper (some link there perhaps). The second husband (John Meeson) was also a beer seller. If anyone can possibly shed some light on any of these I would be most grateful indeed
