red mail Gaffney / Roskams ?Jefferies?
I am looking for some further information regarding Albert Edward Gaffney (1899-1959) and Lilian (Lily) Ivy Maud Roskams (born 1900). We know that they were married in 1921 in Bethnel Green and had one son, Ronald Albert born in 1923. The specific information we are looking for is whether they divorced and/or split up as there is a family rumour that Lilian remarried when her son, Ronald, was young. It is also believed that she may have moved to the Tottenham area and become a greengrocer. We cannot seem to find any information regarding Lilian remarrying. The search is made ever more difficult because Lilian went by several other names; Lily, Ivy, Lilian. Her married name was Gaffney and her maiden name was Roskams however she was adopted as a child and her adoptive parents' were Wakeham. This may be a red herring but I believe the surname Jefferies (spelling unknown) may have been the surname of her second husband. Any inforamtion anybody can find or give would be much appreciated!

Michael was a soldier and Anne next appears in India where she married Patrick McGUIRE, a sergeant in HM 21st, at Dinapore, 4/4/1842. They had one child that we know of John (Jack) born ?. It is assumed that Patrick McGUIRE died in India because she then married Patrick LARKIN (Calcutta ?). We are still searching for the children of this marriage. Family lore suggests there could have been up to 7. We have only managed to track down a Mary Anne LARKIN, B. 9/7/1847, Bengal, India, F. Patrick LARKIN, M. Anne. Next record we have of her is her entry to Australia. She is accompanying her husband Patrick LARKIN, a Chelsea Pensioner who is a guard over convicts on board the "Cornwall" which arrived at Hobart, Tasmania 20/7/1851. With them were John Maguire LARKIN, Thomas LARKIN & Patrick LARKIN. Patrick LARKIN (Snr.) is believed to have died in Victoria round 1852/53. Anne next married Patrick HOGAN in Hobart 8/4/1854 and they had 11 children. 6 were born in Tasmania while the youngest 5 were born in the Warwick, Toowoomba area of southern Queensland. From here the family moved to northern NSW. Patrick HOGAN died 18/5/1892 at Lismore and Anne died 12/11/1915 at Murwillumbah. Any information which could fill in our gaps would be appreciated.

red mail Smith, George/June E. Bland and William Bland Smith
Family story is that William B (Bland) Smith (b. 1862, possibly in London and reportedly a twin) was "abandoned" along with his mother and siblings by his father (possibly George, although I've only seen this name referenced once, possibly married to a June E. Bland) who went to Australia to find his fortune in gold. He never returned or sent for the family. Ok, so far, probably not a rare occurrence during the gold rush, but....here is the rest of the story. Supposedly, William B. Smith was taken under the wing of a man named Bland (surname) whom he told that he was going to find his father and kill him for abandoning the family to the streets. Another version is that William B. was under an apprenticeship of some kind to Bland. According to the story, Bland told William B. that once he became "a man" (he was presumably in his teens when this happened) and if he still felt this way, Bland would buy his passage to Australia. Apparently time passed and William B's feelings did not change so true to his word, Bland took him to the dock and bought him passage....here's the twist. Instead of buying passage to Australia, he bought him passage to America. Another version of the story is that the father just came to America and William B. was to meet up with him but by the time he had found him "George" had already passed away. Not sure which story is accurate, if any, but thought I would give a shot at posting on this site to see if this was a family story for anybody else. I am looking for any information on William B.'s father and/or mother so I can continue my search. William B. immigrated to America in 1886. He made his residence, for the most part, in Chico, CA and had 7 children.
