red mail Mary Davies, born Saughall, Cheshire, probably 1597
She was the famed HORNED LADY OF SUGHALL, and the records are incredibly scarce and muddled, for various reasons. She was exhibited (i.e. as in a freak show) in London at around the age of 80, so late 17th Century, and I am trying to pull together the true story from all the rubbish published. So, question, does anyone know of any (relatively) quick way that it would be possible to find a record of her death/burial/cremation without having to actually travel the 200+ miles to London, please? Jim

red mail Devanney, Faulkner, Jones
I understand my great grandmother was Catherine Devanney either born in Cork, Ireland or, being youngest child I think, maybe was born in London, England. (19th May 1875 - December 4th 1957) She married William Elmer Faulkner and one of their children was Marjorie Faulkner (21st May 1898 -April 14th 1965) Marjorie married Joseph Walter Jones and one of their children was my Father, Terrence Walter Jones -their youngest child, his siblings being Gladys (died age 2), Edwin Joseph, Stanley Elmer, and Eileen Emily) we had emigrated to America and were living there when my grandmother, Marjorie passed away in 1965. I was born on April 17th 1957, the year my Great grandmother Catherine Faulkner (nee Devanney) died. I am curious about the heritage of William Elmer Faulkner and know nothing about his family. I understand that his Wife, Catherine (Devanney) Faulkner was descended from Irish people from Cork and in that line that there may be Irish, Spanish and even an Irish Spanish Jewish strain way back named Selez or Seles. Can anyone help? I would like that clarified. My Father's Father died very young in 1941 but don't have a birth date for him (Joseph Walter Jones) Am also interested in the Jones line -Thanks, Kim

red mail George Steadman
I am looking for details of the origins of George Steadman, a ship agent and general wheeler-dealer (quite a successful one) who lived in Cannon Street Road in the early 1800s. He was born in about 1755, but I do not know where or who his parents were. He married Sarah Roberts in 1796 in Westminster. She was born in 1766 and died in 1850. The 1841 census says she was not born in Middlesex, but it says the same for her son, and he was. That son, George, was christened in 1798 in St Andrew Holborn, but married in 1812, so I presume he must have been born a couple of years earlier. The next generation down was George Thomas Steadman, born in 1812. He became a solicitor, which makes me wonder if there is any connection with James Farrar Steadman, a prominent solicitor of the early 1800s.
red mail William Lowrie
I am looking for information about the birth of William Lowrie, a copper plate printer, who was apprenticed to Joseph Gadd in Dean's Court, St Martin le Grand in about 1780. His marriage licence application states that there was no baptismal record for him because his parents were dissenters. The burial record when he died in 1832 suggests that he was born in about 1763-4. He may be the brother of John Clavering Lowrie, the son of Alexander Lowrie and Mary Clavering; John was a clockmaker's apprentice in about 1780. Alexander married Mary in Saint Botolph Bishopsgate on 20th April 1760. The clockmaker's guild apprenticeship records for John C Lowrie show that in 1780 he was a gardener in Hackney. Any further information about William's origins or about Alexander would be most welcome.

red mail HUMAN BALLOON - Daily Chronicle 1925
I recently received a newspaper article from a very helpful and generous Australian researcher regarding one of my ancestors. The article was printed in the Western Mail, Perth on Thursday 5 February 1925, page 21 and also in the London Daily Chronicle which later became the Daily Mail. "MAN BLOWN OVERBOARD" How John Edward Nelson, a seaman of the White Star Liner "Adriatic" was lost in mid Atlantic was decribed by the commander Captain F E Beadnell (reports the London "Daily Chronicle") "We met terrific seas and a wind of 80 miles an hour" said Captain Beadnell "Nelson was on deck securing a lifeboat when the ship gave a lurch, and this allowed the wind to catch his oilskins. His clothing filled out balloonwise and Nelson was lifted into the air and carried overboard. In the enormous seas it was impossible to lower a boat. To have attempted to rescue Nelson would have involved the fruitless sacrifice of other lives" Can anyone in the London area assist here please, with perhaps a search of Daily Mail Archives for a copy of the article and even, perhaps an Inquest Report??? Apparently, the death was not registered in Western Australia, nor have I found it registered in Liverpool where John Edward was born. Would so very much like to obtain a copy Lynda

red mail Smith Grand Union Canal
Are there any descendants of Thomas Smith b. 1876 Stratford, Essex? His father was John, mother Eliza and brother Jack (John). Believe he had a wife Florrie. Thomas was a barge horse worker on the Grand Union Canal, and the family story is that he got drunk, fell in and was drowned. Unfortunately no-one had any idea when! So, if there are any descendants out there who can help - please! Also, if anyone has any other ideas how I can trace him - there are MILLIONS of Thomas Smith deaths - I would be very grateful. Thank you.

red mail looking for WEAVER relatives
I am looking for my maternal mother's grandmother, born Florence Augusta Weaver, born in London around late 1800's. Was in service to a family in Clapham district, and her family came from either Essex or Sussex, and were farmers. My mother would dearly like to know who her Maternal grandfather was, as his name does not appear on her mothers birth certificate, and sh has a feeling some other reason may have prevented his name appearing, other than illegitimate, as others have told her. My late grandmother Winifred Olive Weaver, also had other names like Mable and Elsie, added. She came out here to Australia, in 1924, with the sister of her best friend Florrie, and she worked here as a housemaid, before marrying. All we know is my grandmother was put into a boarding school in Surrey, all her school years, and never had any contact with relatives after she turned 5 years old. She did live with an Aunt, in London, I think, before she went to the boarding school. The question my mum and I are trying to work out is, who paid for her school fees?, who was her father?, did he pay for her, and was he a man of Wealth or otherwise? If anyone, relative or friend, please let us know any information you might know. It would be greatly appreciated.

We have been doing some research into our family history and have identified some living relatives who we are now trying to trace. We believe they have two children, Simon Robert born Q3 1969 in Hackney and Gary Richard born Q1 1972 in Waltham Forest. Joyce Gaffney (born Q4 1954 in Hackney) married Michael R Smith in Q2 1973 in Waltham Forest. We are unaware of whether they have any children. We are looking to get in contact with any of these relatives. We have tried the London phonebook but have been unsuccessful. If anyone is aware of their whereabouts then please let me know. Many thanks
