red mail HARFORD - (Sutton Benger - Wiltshire)
My 3-greats-grandmother was Elizabeth WEST nee HARFORD of Christian Malford, across the river from Sutton Benger: she died on the 1 Sept 1866 at CM, the widow of Thomas WEST (d 1865 CM). She was born around 1799, according to her death record and the censuses. Even though she said in the Censuses that she was born in CM, the surname Harford doesn't figure in the CM church records and censuses. BUT "HARFORD" IS WELL-KNOWN AT SUTTON BENGER AND GREAT SOMERFORD. Her children were Sarah WEST (b 5 Apr 1815 Unknown Location, d Walcha NSW 1909), John WEST (bapt 27 Jan or June 1817 CM, d Bath 7 Oct 1871), Ann WEST (bapt 4 Nov 1821 or 1822 CM, d ??), William WEST (bapt 3 Sep 1826 CM, d ??), Elizabeth WEST jr (bapt 22 or 28 July 1832 CM, d ??), Thomas WEST jr (b 19 May 1838, bapt 24 June 1838 CM, d ??). Can't find any references to William and Thomas jr WEST in the later Censuses, suggesting they also left England. I am descended from John since his son George WEST (b CM 1842) migrated to New South Wales and married at Walcha in 1871 and became my great-grandfather. Any help in tracing these people would be greatly appreciated.

Wilcot &Wroughton - (Wilcot - Wiltshire)
Researching Hawkins of Wilcot: William Hawkins from Tidcombe married Ann Matthews in Wilcot in 1741, the first Hawkins to arrive in the village. Where was William born? First born sons named Thomas, so could be William was the son of Thomas Hawkins from a neighbouring village? Later, in 1806, Betty Hawkins gave birth to an illegitimate son, Job. Family lore has it that the father was connected to the Montagu/Wroughton family who were Lords of Wilcot Manor and, later, Stowell Lodge. The most likely candidate being John Gore (later Admiral Sir) who married Georgiana Montagu in 1808. Any ideas? The family dispersed in the late 1800's to London, Reading, Surrey and Monmouthshire and my branch to Wroughton and Swindon. The last Hawkins in Wilcot, John, died in 1930. I have the complete? family tree down to the present day but I am stuck at 1741 and would dearly like to know more about Betty who died in 1834 aged 58, unmarried.
