red mail Shergold/Yates
My paternal grandmother was born Lelia Bessie Shergold, in Sutton Veny in Wiltshire. Her mother was Flora Yates, who married Henry Shergold. Flora had a sister, Alice. Their parents were William and Maria Yates. Lelia had three siblings: Isabel Maria, Ethel Mary and Cyril Mullins. Isabel (Belle) married Edgar Wiffen, Ethel married George Read, and Cyril married Mabel Bridges. Lelia married the wonderfully-named Elford James E Haggett in 1914, who was "lord of the manor" at Court Barn, Somerset. He was 44, she was 26. He died relatively young, and left her everything. She sold Court Barn, and moved to stay with her sister Belle at Crowd Hill Farm, not far from Winchester. She married my grandfather, Albert Foxwell Reynolds in 1929, and my father, John, was born in 1930. She had no children from her marriage to Elford Haggett. The Shergolds, I understand, lived in Duck Lane in Sutton Veny. Lelia was relatively wealthy after her first husband's death, and seemed keen to invest in property, purchasing a farm for her sister and her husband, and a house for herself and Albert. They moved fairly often, and eventually had their own home built in Chandlers Ford in the late 1950s. I'm not sure, though, what ultimately happened to this apparent wealth. It most certainly didn't end up with my father! My grandparents' last home together was in Twyford, near Winchester, where Lelia died in 1973. Albert died in 1976, having moved to Southampton to be nearer my father. Flora and Henry Shergold are buried in the cemetery in Hedge End, and I have wondered if they chose to live with Belle and her husband on Freegrounds Farm (bought for them by Lelia).
Hello. Am currently researching Dabny family. I would really appreciate anyone out there with the same interests, and the above surnames too, to get in touch. Found a reference, in History of Wilts vol 8, 1965, to an Elias Daubeney, and his wife Agnes, who received lands in Sutton Veny, around 1350. This is an alternative version of the surname. These Daubenys came from Glos (Cromhall) but it is a strange coincidence that they should have received lands in SV. Would like to find out whether Elias and Agnes had any children that may have settled in their manor there. And an odd, terrifying story: Elias and Agnes had a daughter, Elizabeth, who murdered her husband, Andrew Wauton (another Sutton Veny name, by the way) and she was burned for the crime in 1387...
red mail Everett Family of Sutton Veny
Hi I am looking for information about my family. My grandfather Albert Everett was born in Sutton Veny in 1872 (the son of William Everett and Faney Cooper) and later moved to South Wales. He joined the Grenadier Guards and served in the Boer War. According to the 1911 census he lived at 2 Halls Road Risca and at that time worked has a coal miner. He married Eliza Guy (born 1874) around 1898 and they had several children all born in South Wales. Albert died in 1935 and Eliza died in 1958. Any information would be much appreciated and I am willing to share anything I have. Thank you Barry
