I am descended from John Giles and Ester Avenell, both from Highworth and born 1801 and 1798 respectively. They had 3 sons, the 3rd was James Thomas, my ancestor, born 1829. I can follow the Avenell line back to 1711, when Ester's grandfather Henry was born, but don't know any more about the Giles line. Names of females marrying in include Bailey and Fertecine. I know more about these people and the intervening generations.

My Gt Uncle Herbert GILES bn 1888 in Stanton Fitzwarren married Bertha Jane CLACK on 27th Dec 1909 at South Marston. He worked on the GWR Railway, Highworth Branch Line(engineering)and lived in Highworth. Sadly he, Herbert, Service No 675060 21st Bn of the 1st Surrey Rifles was killed on Sept 4th 1918 in Flanders and I had no idea if I have any Aunts from this marriage but now find there were 3, KATHLEEN E. bn 1912, ALICE M. bn 1915 and Bertha V. bn 1918 regd 1st Q 1919 so, he never glimpsed his youngest daughter. One of my relatives drove Colonel Bouveries car at Sevenhampton House until the Col, passed away, my father told me,it may have been a son of one of these girls possibly with the surname PAGE ? The mother of Herbert was still in Stanton in the 30,s,I have her on a photo in 1925, she was Martha Giles nee LEGG bn Hampton near Highworth in 1855 and married John Robert Giles a widower in Dec 1881 at Stanton,any other persons interested in these ?. Today 20-3-2010 the son of Bertha V and I have made contact,thanks to Curious Fox. Allen.

The original parish registers showed that my great-grandfather, William Barnes, was born on 20 June 1795 at Highworth to Francis and Elizabeth Barnes. Francis's occupation was shown as licensed victualler but her maiden name is unknown. Documentary information (now lost) indicated that he was landlord of the Rose and Crown, Highworth. My great-grandfather does not appear to have any siblings locally nor does his father Francis appear to link-up with any other Francises locally on the IGI. Can anyone help with information on Francis and Elizabeth or records for the Rose and Crown?
