red mail Gartland, Monaghan
Trying to find information about my great great grandfather, Eugene (Owen) Gartland, believed to have been born in County Monaghan around 1826. His father was Michael Gartland, a blacksmith, who had died by the time Owen married in 1853. Although Owen was Catholic, he was married in Sunderland Parish Church, Co. Durham to Mary Ann Clark whose father, William, was also a blacksmith. Owen worked as a blacksmith for his father in law before he and Mary were married. Although it is difficult to read the enumerator's writing, the 1861 census records Owen's place of birth as what looks like Munehan (which I took to be Monaghan) recently confirmed by an Irish genealogist at the Who Do You Think You Are exhibition at Olympia! Any information welcome.
