red mail My Home - (Ardfinnan, Ard Fhionain, and Parish - County Tipperary)
The village of Ardfinnan, population approximately 2000, in County Tipperary ,is situated seven miles west of Clonmel.( Irelands largest inland town).Overlooking the village is the magnificent Castle built in 1185 by John Earl of Morton who later became King John. The village of Ardfinnan was once a very important place as it commanded a ford over the river Suir which was one of the few crossing places on the river during the flood season. Now a magnificent Bridge of some fourteen arches spans the river overlooked by the Castle.Ardfinnan derives it's name from Saint Finnan who founded a monistary and brought weaving to the area which continued up to 1971 when it was forced to cease operations as their was a decline for its goods due to recession.Today we have two factories in its place, one producing insulation for the building industry and the other produces paper bags for many different uses. The village is a picturesque setting with a green at it,s centre ,a beautifull wood as a back drop with the weir and river at its centre, village life consists of it,s many clubs which cater for both young and old and is perhaps one of the best places to live and work as the pase of life is carefree and pleasant(a little piece of Heaven you might say).

red mail Looking for Patrick Myles (Miles) - (Ballylaffin - County Tipperary)
The location of the Miles (Myles) family home is recorded in family history as Ballylaffin. The earliest name I have is Edward Miles (Myles) who is the father of Patrick. Patrick Myles (b ~1770-1800) married (m. ~1790-1820) Mary Pendergast (Prendergast)(b ~1770-1800)and had 4 children, 2 of whom I have names for: Thomas Myles and Bridget Myles (b ~1810-1825). Bridget was nicknamed Delia. Thomas married Julia Longergan and lived in the family home in Ballylaffin. In 1842 Bridget married Patrick Kelleher who "came from a poor family." I can only surmise from this that the Miles (Myles) were a wealthy family. Patrick and Bridget lived in Castlewater in Fourmilewater in either Tipperary or Waterford. This line is my ancestral line. I am looking for relatives of Edward and Patrick Myles (Miles), Mary Predergast (Pendergast) and Patrick Kelleher. This would include parents, grandparents, etc. as well as siblings. The only exact date I have is the 1842 marriage so I can only surmise the other dates.

It is possible that Thomas had a brother Michael who married Mary Hyland and had 10 ch - all listed as born Knocknagopple between 1826 & 1845, roughly same time frame as ch of Thomas & Margaret. 2 definite relatives of our family seem to match 2 of these children Michael b 1836 and Maurice b 1833. Michael lived in a castle and lived to 100+ yrs. Their dau Catherine m Thomas Caplice who died young and Michael helped rear the g'children. red mail Carrick-on-suir and Carrickbeg - (Carrickbeg - County Tipperary)
I am attempting to trace family history for the name of Power in Carrick-on-suir and Carrickbeg. My Grandfather was Patrick Power of Mass Road Carrickbeg b.29/10/1871(Carrickbeg), his wife was Mary (nee O'Brien)from Piltown. Patrick's parents were Edmund Power and Margaret(nee De La Hunty)married 1/3/1862 in Carrickbeg. There are 2 entries for an Edmond's baptism on 25/12/1843 in the COS register one showing the wife's name as Ratch and the second as Rochford (although Roche is the more common name locally). I have not found any other children from the first of these parents. However other children are recorded for the second couple - Ellen Rochford - (i.e John, Martin and Ellen. The baptism date for both Edmonds was the same as were the sponsors and Priest - hence the confusion!. I am having problems finding the marriage or any other details on either of these 2 marriages and would appreiate any information. During my research i have amassed a quantity of Power family data from COS and am happy to share with others interested in the name who may be having problems!

red mail Mullins Family of Carrickbeg - (Carrickbeg - County Tipperary)
From the information and data I have, my great-great grandfather Den(n)is Mullins came to America from Ireland around 1855. His date of birth is unclear but the 1880 U.S. census has him as about 40 which would indicate he was born around 1840. This seems to make sense because his wife, Bridget Quinn was born around the same time also in Ireland. Dennis died in Hudson, NY on 12/5/1887 while Bridget passed away in Hudson on 12/3/1903. According to Dennis' death certificate, his parents were John and Elizabeth Mullins but there is no indication as to where in Ireland he came from. That has been my task for the last 27 years. Last night, I happened upon a fairly comprehensive book listing all the burial sites in the old Hudson City Cemetery and found a listing for a Patrick Mullins. I'm pretty sure that Patrick was Dennis' brother along with one other - Owen. The notation next to Patrick's name was "Native of Carrickbeg, County Waterford, Ireland". This was the first indication I've ever found as to where these Mullins' came from. As I said, Dennis was the son of John and Elizabeth Mullins and had at least two brothers, Patrick and Owen. Dennis married Bridget in St. mary's Church in Hudson, NY on 7/5/1857 making both pretty young by today's standards. They had at least 10 children - John C., Katherine, Elizabeth, Bridget A., Dennis, Jr., Patrick H., William B., Michael, Eugene and Mary Ellen. John C. was my great-grandfather. I'm looking for information on any Mullins's from the Carrickbeg area of Waterford. If you can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Peter

John Edward Fitzgerald Shortt was born on 30 June 1863 and baptised on 11 October 1863 in Templeharry Church, near Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, Ireland. His parents were John Shortt (1830-1905) and Harriett Anne Burriss (1843-1866) and they immigrated to New Zealand in 1865, apparently leaving their son to be brought up by his grandparents, Richard & Mary Burriss of Graffan, near Garrane, County Tipperary. Graduate records from Trinity College, Dublin, indicate that he obtained a BE degree in 1885 and an MA degree in 1888. The 1891 England Census shows that John E. F. Shortt, age 29, born in Ireland, was a Grammar School Headmaster living in Hallgarth, Pickering, Yorkshire. Also recorded, his wife, Anna A. Shortt, age 26, born in Ireland and William M. Burriss, a boarder age 24, born in Ireland, an Assistant School Master. The 1901 England Census shows John E. F. Shortt, age 37, a School Master and his wife, Anna A. Shortt, age 36, both born in Ireland, living in Hallgarth, Pickering, Yorkshire. Do any of the above names have a connection with your Shortt or Burriss family trees?

red mail William Callinan born c1808 Limerick died Sydney - (Limerick Junction - County Tipperary)
SEEKING DESCENDANTS FOR FAMILY HISTORY COMPILATION There is a record of a William Callinan who emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1858: "Callinan William, 50 years of age, August, 1858 arrived on the ship 'Donald McKay'." He was alone on the ship. The death certificate for William Callinan, 11 October, 1887, (obtained) shows that he died at 230 Bourke Street, Sydney, aged 79 years which makes him born circa 1808. The certificate states his father was John Callinan a farmer, and his mother was Margaret Minahan. Informant for the death was his son William Callinan, 27 old, a Civil Servant living at 230 Bourke St, Sydney. His death was registered on 11 October, 1887. He was buried on 12 October, 1887 in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Petersham. The certificate states that William Callinan was born in Limerick Ireland, and had been in New South Wales for 29 years at the time of his death. This means he emigrated to Australia around 1858 as stated in the Victorian records. This was some eight years ahead of his wife Julia (Nee Mackay) on board the ship "Africana" on 15.3.1866. The certificate states he married Julia Mackay, when he was 35 years of age (circa 1843- see # below) at the Roman Catholic Church, Thurles Co. Tipperary, Ireland. It lists his children as being; Mary A, 43 years; Jane (Kilday) 40 years; Kate, 38 years; Margaret, 33 years; Edward, 31 years; Julia, 29 years; William, 27 years, all living. The certificate states that there were 2 males and one female deceased. At the New South Wales State Archives, Kingswood, Corrective Services Registers of Prison Staff c1867-1873 and Prison Officers c1881-1887 show that William Callinan was first appointed as a Warder at Denniliquin Gaol 28 May, 1862, replacing an officer named Boyden. He worked there for seven years and was transferred to Wollongong Gaol on 1 August, 1869 salary during this time was six shillings and six pence a day. He was transferred to Parramatta Gaol on 1 February, 1875 where he was employed as a "messenger". He retired from the Prison Service on 21 October, 1881.
