BISHOP, Claude -- Noel Streatfeild Matinee in Eastbourne, Sussex, ca 1931-1934
I am an American writer attempting to find information on Mr. and Mrs. Claude BISHOP of Eastbourne, and any local children who performed in a charity matinee written by Noel Streatfeild (and published by Heinemann in 1934) and held at the Bishop home in the early 1930s. In particular I would like to know Mr. Bishop's line of work; whether he served in the military; his hobbies and interests. Also Mrs. Bishop's name and social activities; and any information about the house where the performance was held (apparently the performance took place in an old billiard room converted to a theatre); what charity it was meant to benefit, etc.; and how the Bishops knew Noel Streatfeild. In the introduction to the Heinemann book, Streatfeild mentions two children, Ann and Sybil. In the playlet "The Cat," part of the matinee, Ann plays the character of Sylvia and Sybil ("who was six and looked like a little boy") played Tony. Sybil may have later become Mrs. Sybil Sandison, who acted in the Matinee and is quoted about it in Angela Bull's 1984 biography of Noel Streatfeild. If anyone has photos, recollections, or newspaper clippings; or can supply full names of Mrs. Bishop or of Ann or Sybil or other persons involved with the performance, I would be immensely grateful!

red mail Union House, Colstick, Cosstick, Cowstick
In my family research I came across the fact that my GG grandmother Sarah Colstick was living in the workhouse(Union House)in Eastbourne in the 1851 Census. My G grandmother Jane was born there in 1851. I have Jane's bible in which interestingly enough she spells her name Cowstick. It is amazing where new leads come from in family research. It could be that the old Sussex pronunciation of the word could cause confusion! The first Poor House in Eastbourne is said to have been in today's Grove Road, but previous to 1817 it was in Pillory Place, now part of Bradford Street. By 1934 it was joined together with the ex-calvary barracks to become the Union Workhouses for Eastbourne and surrounding parishes following the Act of 1834. Life in such a place for the unmarried mother forced to be there due to her condition was not a "bed of roses". Many workhouses introduced a starvation diet for nine days after delivery from a single woman as a "deterrent against the use of the workhouse as a place to be confined". It is said of the Eastbourne workhouse in the middle of the nineteenth century that "erring women who had been driven to seek the cold shelter of the workhouse walls in their hour of need have been excluded from any participation in trifling luxuries afforded to the inmates at the joyous season of Christmas and are to be debarred from hearing the addresses and singing in the festivities at a time of goodwill towards men".

My great grandfather, George Ambrose Wallis, was the first Mayor of Eastbourne and lived first at Holywell Court and then at Fairfield Court (now demolished). I would like to hear from anyone who has information about his work for the Duke of Devonshire (he designed Dukes Drive) or who has information about his daughter, Florence Alice, and her marriage to Henry Holman, a doctor who lived at Furze Link, Denton Road, and then in Beachy Head Road.
Sunnyside Boarding House
Gr.Gt Aunt Lily Huntingford ran a boarding house at 16 Cambridge Road Eastbourne with a Miss Sargent in the 1930's. Seeking any Sargent researchers who may know how they met/their connection. Update: from 1911 census Miss 'Minnie' Sargent turns out to be Amelia Sarah and the two ladies met whilst in service together in Merstham. In 1913 they 'emigrated' to Canada under an assisted passage scheme but returned in 1914. Amelia/Minnie is the daughter of Robert & Mary A. Sargent living at 1 Station Approach Road, Reigate in 1891. I have a couple of photos for this lady for sharing with anyone interested in this family.

red mail Eastbourne, East Sussex
Eastbourne sits on the south coast of East Sussex between Brighton and Hastings. It is a large seaside town with some 90,000 inhabitants, but began as a small village in Saxon times. Prior to this, Bronze-age settlers lived in various areas within and around what is now the town, and Celts are known to have settled on the South Downs at the top of Eastbourne. Eastbourne's name comes from 'Burne' the stream which ran through the Old Town of Eastbourne, but which is now just a small pond in Motcombe Gardens. It is overlooked by St. Mary's Church, a Norman church which alledgedly lies on the site of a Saxon Moot. The 'East' was added in the 13th century. Edward II visited the village of East Burne in 1324 and the village began to grow. In the1450s, Eastbourne men "Thomas Profot - gentilman, Richard Burton - yeoman and Thomas Motard - yeaoman" are all pardoned after Jack Cade's rebellion against the government in 1450. And in 1467 The Manor of Bourne was held by Baron de Roos, though it is later denied him due to his support of the Lancastrian movement. During the middle ages the area prospered as a major sheep farming and fishing area and in 1555 East Bourne was sold to three wealthy Sussex families - Burton, Gildredge and Selwyn. In 1556 Bourne Place (now Compton Place) was built, and still stands as a private ladies training college today. At the end of the 17th century, Eastbourne folk were involved in battle with the French - and on on 30th June 1690 the English and Dutch navies were unsuccessful as they fought the French off Beachy Head.
