Mary Ellen Rawles
I am looking to find if anyone knows about Mary Ellen Rawles, born in Glasgow, Scotland, 1870. I believe she may have been raised in Ireland but the census records have been destroyed. If anyone has any information or an idea of where I can find some kind of records I would greatly appreciate that.
George William Rawles
I have a 3rd great grandmother that married, George William Rawles, born 1849, Stepney, England. He is the son of Thomas and Susan. I found him in a census 1861, when he lived with his parents. Then in 1867 he marries, Elizabeth Wallace. They have a son, John born in 1868, Lewes. They lived in Brighton but SHE WAS FROM GLASGOW. Does anyone know how these two would have meet. Her father, Thomas Wallace, dies in 1872 but I can't find out where a young man from Lewes and a Glasgow girl would have meet? George's father was a Journeyman Tailor from Lewes. Anyway, She left and gives birth to a daughter, Mary Ellen in 1870, High Church, Glasgow. We found he did not die! We did find he was sentenced for fowl theft, etc., 18 months hard labor in a Lewes Sussex paper and from 1870 on, he is not to be found till he marries in 1889 and ends up in Calne, England. Any help I would love! Prison? I do not know?????
Emma & Charles John Dance
Emma Lewis married Charles John Dance at the Wesleyan chapel on Norfolk Road in Brighton in 1885. Charles was a widower with children. He worked as a hotel porter but subsequently seems to have worked as a bedding porter or upholsterer at the county hospital (I don't know what that means). Charles died in 1915. Emma died in 1918 in her 50s. They had 3 children, one dying as a baby. I think their son George Lewis Dance worked on the railways. I'm trying to confirm whether Emma is one of my Lewis's. If so, she would have been born at Eastnor in Herefordshire in 1861 to William Lewis, usually described as a sawyer, and his wife Mary. If anyone researching this family or has any information about their descendants, I'd like to hear from you. In particular, I'm trying to identify some people in old photos. Thank you

Looking for Peggy Jones from Brighton, Sussex
Peggy JONES was the childhood/school friend of my mother, Joan PRINCE during the 1930's in Brighton. Mom lived above her father's tea shop J O PRINCE at the corner of Edward & Tillstone. In 1940 she and Peggy JONES signed up with the RAF together. During the war mom lost contact with Peggy. She believes that she did marry, but doesn't know more than that. Mom moved to Canada at the end of the war and has always wondered what became of her friend. If she happens to still be living, she will be in her 90's. Any information regarding her would be appreciated as I would love to be able to share it with my mom.
John Goddard and Emily Jones
John Henry Goddard, born 1870 Brighton, married Emily Jones at St John's, Brighton on 25th November 1889. On the 1901 Census, John and Emily were living at Warple Way, St Faiths, Wandsworth. The census says that Emily was born in Bristol c1870. On their marriage certificate, Emily's father, William Jones, is listed as a hawker. Does this mean that he was a Romany? I would like to know further details of this family as I cannot find birth details for Emily Jones and would like to know her mother's name. Does anyone know when the Jones family moved to Sussex?
Folkard Bible
I am in possession of a family bible for a branch of the Folkard family. Most of the entries are for the Brighton area. Would like the bible to end up with a Folkard. Not wanting any financial reward, just want it not to end up being destroyed. Contact me if interested.
red mail Effie FORD, born 1877, Enfield.
Effie was a daughter of Joseph Ford and Annie and was one of six children. She died on 9th December, 1975 at 9, Stanford Avenue, Brighton, which is now a care home. In 1881 she lived in Welwyn and in 1891 in Croydon. She was my grand-aunt. Her story is a sad one and I would very much like to know what happened to her as I have been told that she was committed to some kind of asylum when she was quite young as she suffered from "religious mania". I have only recently found this out. Whatever may or may not have been wrong with her, she lived to a grand old age. I do understand that any issue of mental health was a taboo back in the early 1900s and I also understand that people could be committed for all sorts of problems which are not considered to be taboo or even material today. But I knew other members of her immediate family and subsequent generations and she was never mentioned, I never even knew of her existence, although I have recently found out that my father certainly did. It seemed that she was shrouded in secrecy. 1975, when she died, was only 40 years ago, I am wondering if anybody knew her whilst she lived in Brighton. Was anyone nursing at that address at that time? Did anyone go to her funeral? Can anybody tell me what "religious mania" was in, say, 1910-1920? Perhaps she had hallucinations .. or maybe a 'road to Damascus' experience. The family was not particularly religious and nobody else suffered from anything unusual medically speaking. This poor lady probably spent about 60 years of her life shut away and I have recently found out that at least one of her siblings wanted to 'get her out' from wherever she was, but was presumably over-ruled by other family members. Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Kind regards B

Eliza Hillman was born in Brighton, Sussex on 16 September 1882, her mother was Susan (Suzannah) Jackson, father was John Hillman. Eliza is my great grandmother whom I never met, as she supposedly emigrated to Austraila in or after 1905. She left behind an illegitimate daughter my grandmother. It is my dearest wish to be able to put a picture of Eliza to place on my grandmothers grave stone. Eliza has become so elusive its driving me mad! lol. Many thanks for any help.
Terry family
I am researching the family of Ernest Walter Terry; I am uncertain of his birthdate - it could have been 1886 or 1894 - all details are vague and I've really got nowhere despite extensive research. He was born in Cuckfield, Sussex according to the 1851 census, however a bmd search for Benjamin (find my past and ancestry) has failed to find his birth. He is baptised as an adult in 1812 (this confused me-why would he not have been christened as a baby as was the tradition if he did infact come from Cuckfield, Sussex) I know that the Beal family originally came from France and Mexico-does anybody have any information that might help me? He moved to Brighton and married Harriett Flint also born in 1792 in Worth, Sussex and they had children. They married on November 10, 1813 in Saint Nicholas, Brighton

His marriage certificate give his father's details as Hugh Robert Cressingham, Gentleman. His marriage record within his military file lists his father as Robert Cressingham. I have his military file, I have traced, basically, all of his later life. 38yrs with the Beds. retired 1920 as Quartermaster & Hon. Lt. Col. H Cressingham DSO, DCM. For a man so well documented after his 19th birthday there are no records that I can find for him or his parents prior to that date.. Is there anyone out there who would like a crack at him?? I will share all of the information I have on him, his wife, her family and their daughter. I am at my wits end, every avenue I've tried has not even become a dead end. They're all just non-starters... Thanks in advance Paul.............

red mail Huckin family
I believe that my grandfather, Edward Huckin, ran or owned a butcher's shop at Seven Dials around 1900 and his son(s) also worked there. I understand that many members of his extended family lived in Brighton late 1800s, early 1900s and indeed the names of his son Alfred George Huckin and nephew Arthur Huckin are listed on the Brighton War Memorial, having lost their lives in WW1. It may be that another son, Edward, was a pupil at Varndean school around early 1900. Any information regarding any member of this family would be appreciated in view of the fact that I know so little about my father's family.
