My grandfather Arthur Cranmer Nightingale was said to be the first person to cycle by Penny Farthing from Reigate to London - does anyone know more about this? Late 19th century.
BUFTON/HOLMWOOD
I am seeking/researching any family members/other of a JOHN EDWARD BUFTON (1901 - 1976) who married my Grandmother - ALICE BEATRICE HOLMWOOD (1903 -1977) in REIGATE 1943. At the time of their marriage John's occupation was shown as being with H.M. Forces and Alice was a maid. They were known to have resided/lodged in LESBOURNE ROAD at this time and later moved to Upfield Horley Surrey where I have found other family members. COATES MYSTERY
Can anyone help solve a family mystery?I have found three members of the COATES family from Ripon Yorkshire buried in the Parish of Reigate St.Leonards.Mother Agnes Clare died 1896,daughter Agnes Gertrude died 1911 and now I have found son Arthur buried August 1866 abode The Asylum.I have failed to find father John Coates on any census but Agnes is a widow in 1881 census.Mother and daughter were in Ripon 1851 census when Agnes is still married.Could there be a headstone for this family,there is mention of St.Mary Magdelen's church.Thankyou.

Looking into the families deriving from John Apted and Eleanor Apted (nee Glover) including their 5 children William, Richard, Henry, Ann & John. All born in Reigate. Also studying the second family of Eleanor Apted and unknown father/s from 1820-onwards, children being Eleanor and James Apted (my own ancestor) also born in Reigate. James Apted then married Mary Webb and had 10 children, James, Samuel, Ellen, Susan, Lucy, Mary, Harry, Amelia, George James, & Frank(my Grandfather). All born in Reigate. Interested in making contact with any living family or people interested in old Reigate life particularly in late 19th century.

I am interested in the Hill family, they settled in Reigate, but from research they were based on the current A25 corridor from Godstone, Bletchinly, Redhill & finally Reigate (where they remained). The family lived in 2 houses on Lesbourne Road, my Great aunt & uncle were James Hill & Florence (Brain). Their children were Joan & Henry (both born pre-1930). Florence was a district nurse & also a St. Johns Ambulance Brigade nurse & she worked with the Girls Brigade & Girl Guides.

Joseph Ellis married Jane Anna Sheppeard and had 3 children Wilfrid (or Wilford) Joseph Ellis, Florence Maud Mary Ellis and Bertha Ann Ellis. The children seem to have been born in different areas of Surrey so they must have moved around a lot and I would like to be able to tie them up to address if possible.

Eliza emigrated to VIC, Australia in ~1856 and married John Robert Wilde, my gr gr grandparents. Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently recieved the death certificate for my Great Great Grandfather John Matthews in 1927. He died with the address of St Johns Redhill and the death was recorded by G A Read, Occupier (not known to me!) the occupation of John Matthews is listed as General Labourer of 114 Walnut Tree Close Guildford despite John being 80 years old. Does this ring bells with anyone? This is definetely the person I am seeking because of the Guildford address, but I would like some further details on St Johns if I can find it. I was expecting the death to be informed by either Charles or Edith (dau of John Matthews) Jelley of Redhill and am surprised they are not mentioned. Any comments or thoughts greatly appreciate.

I am researching my family name of SCOTT who were a well known landowners in Surrey during the 1300 - 1700's. Some were titled but all were local benefactors. I am trying to trace the family of Susannah Chantler, born abt 1710, died bef. 1779. Husband Benjamin Cox of Charlwood, Children: Benjamin, Susannah, Nathaniel, John and Isaac. At least 2 of the children were born in Charlwood and remained in that area, so there is a strong possibility that the Chantlers came from that area too.

Their eldest son, Benjamin, and his wife Amy (nee Brewer) emigrated to Australia in 1856 but moved onto New Zealand in 1861. He settled in the Ashburton area where he was a brickmaker and farmer. my ancestors Frederick christopher Blackiston and William Edward Blackiston used one side of the tunnel vaults as their bonded warehouse for their wine and spirits trade. The other side was used by a large brewery. Interested in any more informationon this subject.
