In 1891 - aged 19 - Grocer's Assistant in Holdenhurst. In 1896 - aged 24 - married Bessie TROKE of the Trokes of Holdenhurst/Moordown. In 1898 - a daughter - Winifred Edith VINE - born in Holdenhurst, Hampshire. In 1899 - a son - Herbert Edwin VINE born in Christchurch, Hampshire (grandfather). In 1907 - a son - Leonard George VINE born in Dorking, Surrey. In 1911 - aged 39 - residing in Dorking, Surrey. In 1915 - aged 43 - his burial is recorded. They lived in Myrtle Street in Dorking. I am seeking evidence that Sydney Herbert VINE owned a grocer's shop in Dorking as well as any other activities that he and/or his family may have been involved. During WW2 we were evacuated to Dorking living in the schoolhouse behind the firestation where my father, Arthur Andrews, was headmaster. We knew the Gilliam family well. The father was the stonemason in West St opposite the firestation, and had a yard up Junction Rd. We, Bern & Dave, as kids played with Tony Gilliam and John Rich. Tony had asthma I remember. Mercer connections
My 5xgt grandparents Kichard Keene and Mary Martha or Martha Mary Mercer were married at St Martins in Dorking in 1811. She came from Watts Cross (now Hildenborough area) near Tonbridge, Kent and he came from Fulham. Later they lived in Southwark and Marylebone. There seem to have been a lot of Mercers in Dorking and I am wondering if anyone knows of the connection between those in Dorking and the Tonbridge Mercer family. Thomas Matthew was a shopkeeper of Dorking who is likely to have been born around 1730 (possibly a son of Thomas Matthew and Catherine nee Clark). He married Sarah Smith in 1753 and died in 1807. Thomas and Sarah had at least nine children, of whom at least three were still alive at the time of his death (Henry b 1760; Jenny b 1764, married John H.
