I am researching any MARTEL family links in the CROYDON area especially any that may have the following ancestors attached to their family tree or perhaps any Martel's that traded as Silk Merchants/Agents in the early 1900's. The following family are all French Nationals (as shown in the 1901 & 1911 census) although the children were born in Croydon. Joannes MARTEL brn 1866, wife Antoinette MARTEL brn 1878, Daughter Madelienne MARTEL brn 1898, son Xavier MARTEL brn 1900. 1901 census shows the family residing in Thornhill Road, Croydon - 1911 census shows a Fanney MARTEL brn 1866, plus Antoinette and children - yet Joannes is not listed - all residing at Ashburton Road, Croydon. I have also noted that Fanney was also brn in 1866 the same year Joannes hence it maybe possible they were twins. I would be grateful for any info/feedback that links to this family name either English or French connection. Mny Tnks.

Potter family in Croydon
Searching for more information on the Potter family in Croydon in the nineteenth century. Francis Potter (c.1777 - 1838) and his wife Mary Ann (c.1789 - 1861) had at least 9 children baptised in Croydon between 1808 and 1833. I have not located their marriage, which must have taken place around 1808, but the 1851 census appears to shows Mary's birthplace as Chichester SSX, in 1861 it is given as Croydon. It seems very likely that Francis was a fellmonger (dealing in animal carcasses) in Overton's Yard off Surrey Street - certainly Mary Ann carried on the business there after Francis' death. The couple's known children are William (1808-1843) who married Mary Cronen; Jane (born 1810); John (1813- after 1861) who married Sarah; Mary Anne (1817- after 1838); George (c.1820-1892) a butcher who married Frances Mallery; Francis (1823-1849) a fellmonger who married Mary Nicholson; James (born 1826); Charles (1830-1899) and Henry (born 1833). Charles started out as a butcher and married Caroline Overington in 1852. By Caroline's death in 1875 the couple were living at 14 Lansdowne Road in a sizeable house. Charles remarried to Emily Burton the following year and seems to have become a successful contractor and coal merchant.

I am descended from Charles Edward Brett Inspector 'A' Division, Metropolitan police (he is my GGGGrandfather). Any help appreciated
