red mail Baker about 1800 - (St Margaret South Elmham - Suffolk)
I have traced my family back to Robert Baker, a farmer probably born in South Elmham St Margaret about 1795 or 1800. He married Mary (Surname unknown) probably from Cratfield, a couple of miles away. Their first child Mary was born in 1819 in Fressingfield, also close by. 1821 and 1824 their sons William then George were born and I only have Suffolk as there place of birth. The next two sons Eliza and Elijah were born in Mendham or Needham in Norfolk, not far away. Finally a boy and girl Harriet and James back in Suffolk taking us up to about 1832. In the 1841 Census they are in Metfield, Suffolk, very close to where they started. Robert is listed as a Farmer and in the Whites directory of 1844 he is shown as farming the land in Metfield calld "Rooks" or "Rookery", the farm was linked by a bequest so the rent supported the church. I guess I would probably be able to solve a lot of my questions by a visit to the area - but may be some one out there has already covered some of the ground. I really need Mary's surname and any clues to Robert's parents. Any help would be appreciated - thanks Richard
