At the time of this marriage Edward was a Corporal in the 24th Manchester Regiment and his army number was 2511. He gave his address as 19 Chapel Lane Felixstowe and his age as 21. It is possible that he was married before his marriage to Katie, who died in 1982. I was told he had come 'from abroad' to enlist in the army, so he may have been born abroad and even retuned abroad after he left Katie and their 5 children in 1929/30 when they were living in Ipswich. There has been no sign of him since; can anyone help to locate any reference to him? I have been looking for him for more than 10 years now with no luck so far. My great-great grandfather was Edward Manning, born 24 Oct 1833 in Ipswich. My great-aunt's narrative regarding him follows: "Edward Manning, the youngest son of George and Mariah Manning, was born in Ipswich on October 24, 1833. He was an intellectual prodigy during his school years and was made a proctor (pupil-teacher) in St. Matthew's School at the early age of 15 years. He later attended Highbury College in London to qualify for a teaching career. In 1855, at the age of 22, he was sent out to St. John, N.B., Canada, to establish a Church of England school in that city. This venture was not a financial success and ended after three years. Manning then joined the staff of the Saint John Grammar School teaching Mathematics, History and English." (My Great Aunt continues): "Later, he became head of the classical department, teaching Latin and Greek. He continued teaching in Saint John until 1890, except for an interlude of three years spent in Prince Edward Island from 1876 to 1879. On July 27, 1861, he married Sarah Betts who was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia but who was then living in Saint John."
